Valve adjustment locknut torque?

Recommended Posts

My exhaust valve is a loose .004 and I want to tighten it up some to reduce valve noise but my buddy has my torque wrench off racing for the weekend.  Do you guys just tighten the locknut by hand good and snug or is it crucial to torque it to 10ft lbs?

You can tighten those up past snug - high tensile steel both nut and the tappet screw - so you wont strip the threads

I’m the kind of person that torques the crap out of everything(usually ruining stuff) including valve adjust locknuts. I always triple torque things like that, and somehow the locknut and screw still backed out and fell down into the crankcase!

so torque it, then ride a few times and check torque again!

I adjusted it and snugged it up (tried getting it as tight as it felt when I loosened it) and then marked the locknut with a sharpie so I can just take the cap off after a ride and check it to see if it has moved.  Much quieter now adjusted to tight .004 so .005 won't fit at all.  Thanks!
