2013 Yamaha YZ450F not starting

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

I’m new here. My names Shelton and I’m from Oklahoma. I purchased a 2013 yz450 a little over a year ago but I haven’t got to ride it much due to moving, switching jobs and just haven’t had the time. The bike only has 11 hours on it and before putting it up for winter, it was running fine. Like an idiot though, I didn’t pour in any fuel stabilizer before parking it. It was alil hard to start before parking it but I just figured maybe that was because it wasn’t “broken in” yet or I just hadn’t found how it liked to be started. Well it’s warming up so I decided to get it out and I can’t get the dang thing started. Probably kicked it 300 times in the last 2 days. Before posting here, I’ve tried multiple things with no luck.

I drained the fuel and added new. I changed the spark plug. Made sure the vent line was clear. I’ve pulled the fuel pump out and cleaned the filter. Cleaned the injector. Hooked up the tuner and repushed the original map. No codes were showing on the tuner. When I kick the bike with the fuel line off, fuel does squirt out of the pump. Still haven’t been able to get it started though. I was able to get it started by pouring a little fuel down the throttle body but only for a sec. Also, and I don’t know if this was a good idea but I also disconnected the fuel line from the tank, poured gas in the line, put my air nozzle from the compressor in the end of the line and gave it 40-50 pounds while kicking the bike and it did start and seemed like it would’ve stayed running if I was able to give it more fuel.

So here’s what I’m thinking...Fuel delivery issue? Even tho the fuel pump is working, maybe it’s getting weak (the old gas sitting in it probably didn’t help) and it’s not supplying the pressure the injector needs? I been looking at buying a new pump but wanted to see what you guys thought before spending that kind of money.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Might try holding the throttle wide open and kick through slowly 20X's and then try the starting procedure over again (That is the flooded procedure for fuel injected Yamaha's).  Make sure that you made the connection to the capacitor under the seat for the fuel pump. and if none of that works you might need one of these...

That’s something else I forgot to mention in my original post. I did go through the flooded procedure multiple times in my attempts to get it started. I also checked the connection on the bottom of the pump assembly numerous times as well as the connections inside the tank. Ive never used one of those cleaners before but I might have to give it a try.

Also make sure there are no mouse nests in the exhaust and I am sure that there are none in your air box. But with spark, fuel, and clean air ways, there should be fire.

Ok, I checked the exhaust and it seems to be clear. I know the air box is because I’ve had it open. Like I said the only time I can get it to start at all is by pouring fuel down the throttle body or by disconnecting the fuel line from the tank and sticking my air nozzle in the end and putting alil pressure behind it with the compressor.

Might be a bad gas cap if you can add pressure to the tank and get it to start.  Try to start it with no cap on at all.  I had an overflow line/vent line with a back flow preventer get clogged and caused me to stall while riding.  I thought I blew a top end, but pulled the line, and it ran great.

Ok I’ll give that a try. I’ve checked it to make sure it was clear, but haven’t taken it off completely and tried to start it. I’ll see what happens. But I’m not pressuring up the tank, I’m disconnecting the line from the tank side and putting alil pressure behind what little gas is left in the line and pushing it towards the injector and it’s started twice by doing that.

It sure sounds like a fueling issue. Could possibly also be a fuel filter not letting any gas by. One other thing to try is to pull the line either off the bottom of the tank or off the throttle body, and give it a kick. It should puke some gas past it for a few seconds.

I have done that already and it does puke some gas out but it’s definitely not for a few seconds. It only pukes some out on the the kick down. I don’t have a way of testing the pressure it’s putting out right now so I don’t know if it’s putting out what it needs to be.

okay if your getting spark and gas it will crank so brake it down it has spark but no gas?!?! pull the air box and look in the carb/throttle body and see if gas is coming out if not its got to be the gas lines or its clogged up unhook it from throttle body and see if gas comes out when you try to kick it if so fuel pump is working, clean the injectors and blow in them to make sure

I am just asking, are you using the enrichener knob when starting?

I have tried it multiple ways. With the knob out, in, in with the throttle slightly twisted. No luck.

Okay, I’ll tear it apart and see if I can see gas making it through to the throttle body. If that doesn’t work, I’ll try cleaning on the injector again. I have had the line unhooked from the throttle body and there is gas making it through the line when I kick it, I’m just not sure on the pressure but I’ll run back though everything. Thanks Brandon.

Hey guys, just wanted to give an update. It ended up being the fuel pump. I picked up one of those Quantum fuel pump kits off amazon. I’ve read good and bad things about them, but since it wasn’t that expensive, compared to the OEM one anyways, I thought I’d give it a try and if it didn’t fix the issue I’d have it for a spare. Well it fired right up after installing it so I guess I’ll run it till it quits. I appreciate everyone’s help and all the ideas you sent my way.

That Quantum one fit right in? Good to keep that in the back of the knowledge base. Keep us updated after awhile, and let us know how it does after a few rides, if you wouldn't mind. That is very interesting to me. I heard about them, but I haven't heard how well they are doing in the dirt bikes.

Yea, it fit perfect. Looks just like the oem one other than the color. It came with 4 different filters and retaining rings, one filter was the same as the oem one so I used it. It also came with a new fuel regulator and both o-rings for it. Also came with a new fuel line and clamps but I never took the original one off so I didn’t use it. One thing it didn’t come with was the o-ring that goes on the fuel pump where it presses into the housing, mine was fine so I reused it. Only thing I had to do was file down the female connector on the wire side where it connects to the pump. The connecter was just a tad too long and wouldn’t allow it to clip into place. A couple passes with a file fixed it.

I’ll see how things go and if I have any issues with it I’ll let you guys know.
