Cleaning stator during rebuild

Recommended Posts

So my crank bearings went. Bronze shavings everywhere. I'm in the process of tearing down but am waiting on the flywheel puller to arrive. It should be here next week. In the meantime until I can split the cases I'm cleaning what I have access to so far. What do you guys use to clean the stator? I hear carb cleaner may be too harsh for the copper windings. Mine is full of oil and shavings. Thoughts?

Thanks. I live in Belize so I'll try to find that but I doubt they have it. Anything else works? Diesel, gas, cleaners? I could ship some CRC from back in the States but that's another month delay.

3M 5-Way Penetrant looks good on paper and appears to be available to you locally.

You want something that will clean without damaging plastic or varnish (what the wire is painted with).

Diesel or kerosene are good options where you are. They are petrolium based and are essentially real thin oils so they wont hurt the windings. Avoid anything in an aerosol can or anything like laquer thinner, acetone, tolulene, brake cleaner or especially carb cleaner. Like the last guy said the windings are coated with a type of varnish and those cleaners are intended to remove varnishes.

The newbie has the best answer. Brake cleaners have some of the worst chemicals in it, toxins that are used for paint stripping, and they have carcinogens linked to Parkinsons, many types of cancer, and breathing issues, so if you use it, wear a mask. Some states have banned chlorinated cleaners though its the better brake cleaner, and the non chlorinated is flammable. People like it as its fast and convenient, but stick to the kerosene and toothbrush as its the choice for many things including chains. Engine oil will not harm your stator. Brake cleaner is for brakes, I dont recall seeing on the can, "..and good for stators.."
