Single track in Texas ?

Recommended Posts

Possibly moving back to Texas after 30 years from Washington state. We used to ride Sam Houston NF and Rio Bravo when I was a kid. My question is , is there a lot of public trail available around Dallas/ ft worth or San Antonio / Austin ? Where would you move to if trail riding was a priority?

Texas riding SUCKS.  Sam Houston NF is very limited and beat up and closed as much as it is open, maybe more. Several decent MX tracks in the Hstn area, Rio still very nice. All other riding areas are private and basically only open for events. Couple private family lease areas but those have their own issues. Texas riding SUCKS. I live in the forested area of East TX and do 95% of my riding in Louisiana. Two NF areas, also very limited and beat to a pulp. Compared to what you have available you are going to be very sad regarding db riding. Texas riding SUCKS.

So I get the impression you think Texas riding sucks? I was worried about the  issues you described and to be honest it my be a deal breaker for my potential move South. I live 15 minutes from a public trail system currently and  1/2 hour from a moto park. I was hoping I would get a brighter outlook on Texas riding but it sounds like my suspicions were not far from reality. I Google Earth'd the last place I lived in Texas as a kid and the farm fields are gone and the bayous are surrounded by huge subdivisions. Not the Texas of my youth but that was 30 years ago.

I've been riding HS and Enduros in TX since '72 in every part of the state. Things are not good and getting worse every day. Way too many people moving to TX due to our awesome economy. Great place to make money but not for riding offroad. Sad but true. If my wife would agree we would be going somewhere west, probably the PNW.

The economy is what would be bringing me back to Texas but reading your post gave me pause. What good is money if you can't do what you love ? I google earth'd the places I lived as a kid and the wide open spaces where i would ride my dirtbike are now huge subdivisions.

I was thinking of starting a new thread, but I'll add to this one instead.

I'm entertaining a job offer in the Bastrop area. I prefer single track riding, I'm not a MX guy, unless pitbike racing counts, and my competitive enduro & HS days are behind me, I just want to ride at my own pace. I don't mind paying to ride private land if the trail quality is good. I don't want to have to drive half a day or more to get to quality riding. I also may have kids riding with me at some point in the near future, so places that attract drunk idiots on kwads or SxSs are places that I would avoid.

Is there anything like that in the San Antonio- Austin corridor?

Bastrop is ground central for central TX HS. Several good ones in the area but ALL on private land. Some is open occasionally for public use but belonging to a local club is key to most of it. The issue I see in the future is most of the land being sold off to development, just getting way too valuable to let it sit. Could be ten years, could be next week. TX is booming and that is bringing in way too many people, things will get worse by the day. 90% of my riding is a four to 11 hour drive,,,one way.

In reply to YHGEORGE: I saw your earlier post about wanting to move to the PNW. I have family in Spokane, and although I haven't had a chance to ride there, all reports are that it's good stuff.

The company that I've been taking to also has a facility up there, but the harsh winters are a problem. (I know the coastal PNW has mild winters, but is expensive and crowded).

It's hard to find a region with a balance of good economy, access to metropolitan accommodations, affordable cost of living, and access to wilderness areas. Add the need for good schools and fair weather and it gets harder still.

There are a couple of places in the Austin area - Emma Long Park in Austin https://www.austintexas.gov/sites/default/files/files/Parks/GIS/EmmaLongKioskMap_Motorcycle.pdf and Hidden Falls northwest of town https://www.google.com/maps/place/Hidden+Falls+Adventure+Park/@30.5898705,-98.1650304,15z/data=!4m5!3m4!1s0x0:0xabfc143fa67ee501!8m2!3d30.5898705!4d-98.1650304

www.txtracks.com and www.riderplanet-usa.com are good sites to check out area riding. The DFW area has quite a few places to ride at. A lot of the cross country orgs have prerides prior to races to burn in the tracks without having to be a part of their race, get to ride some neat places. Some other riding locations are about 2.5 hours average drive away: Red River, Crossbar Ranch, Barnwell Mtn, CTOR, Hidden Falls...

If you were planning on moving to west Texas or the panhandle of Texas you would be in better luck for single track. There are four different enduro clubs surrounding the Lubbock and Amarillo area that have great trails. Plus there is three (maybe four areas) OHV parks that you can access. I know there has been some people say that the riding here sucks (especially if you live in the heavy populated areas) but honestly out of all the places to ride in the country the Texas panhandle has some of the best riding around. I think a lot of it depends on where you live in Texas.

@lpr23, can you elaborate a bit more on the Enduro clubs around Lubbock / Amarillo. We're in Lubbock and also used to riding single track in the Pend Orielle and Colville National Forests in Washington and Idaho. Always looking for places to ride closers to home than Cloudcroft, NM. Beautiful up there but SO far away.

Check with local bike shops, especially ones selling euro bikes.  Lubbock Trail Riders is a great group with an awesome lease as is the Post Enduro Association. Also the Texas Offroad Network is a much better site for Texas riding. The Lubbck-Amarillo-Post area has several of the best enduros in Texas. And Cloudcroft NM  is not far also. Google is your friend.

Well, the closest 4 clubs are The "Permian Basin Motorcycle Association" which is located in fluvanna, tx (in between Post and Snyder) I believe they are accepting new members at the time, their website is http://www.pbmaoffroad.org/. The second club is the "boondockers" in Matador, TX their website is http://wtbd.info/. this club is located on a ranch 14 miles north of matador. The third is the Lubbock Trail Riders whose club is located out by Kalgary, TX. Their website is http://www.lubbocktrailriders.net/. And the 4th club (the one I am a part of) is the Post Enduro Association located in Turkey, Tx. Their website is http://www.postenduroassociation.org/. This club butts right up to the Caprock Canyon state park and has some of the best views in the state of Texas (in my opinion)

All 4 of these clubs are a part of TSCEC (Texas State Championship Enduro Circuit) league and will expect you to help with their enduro race each year. Some clubs make it mandatory and others do not. I cant say that I know the fees to each club but they are some where between $300-$600 a year per family. I believe each one of these clubs have a facebook page as well that you can search for. If want to see the type of terrian at each place I bet you could do youtube search of each place and there will be some results from the races they put on each year.
