How to tighten cylinder studs

Recommended Posts

What is the best way to install and tighten the cylinder head studs (number 14 in parts fiche)?  I believe the threads are 9mm x 1.25.  I was thinking of using two nuts back to back and tightening them that way, but I can't find this size nut anywhere.  I was able to use 10mm x 1.25 nuts to tighten them most of the way, but I have a tad bit more to go and the 10mm nuts won't hold when applying more force.

You put 2 nuts on the stud back to back and tighten it.  I don't know the size/pitch off the top of my head but you can use your cylinder head bolts.

Right, I tried that, but the nuts don't hold as the studs get tighter because I'm using 10mm x 1.25 when the studs are 9mm x 1.25.  I thought of using the cylinder head bolts but was a little reluctant to do so because I didn't want to strip them.

I put mine in hand tight, they will tighten more as the nuts are torqued to spec. No need to put them in tight.

I suppose that will work.  The manual specifies a certain exposed length for the studs, so I'd like to get them close to that number prior to putting the head back on.

The manual says 5 inches +/- 0.04".  That's pretty specific, so it must be somewhat critical.  Pretty sure I measured 4-3/4".  Not sure how that's possible, unless they ca be driven 1/4" or more too deep.

The only issue you could have is if the nuts bottomed out on the studs when torquing them down, the factory nuts are not open, they are closed on one side. If unsure screw nut down without washer to see if it works, than reinstall washers.
