Tusk D-Flex Handguards with Turn Signals installation

Recommended Posts

Anyone know if their is anything special I need to know when installing these. Not worried about the mechanics of it but rather the electrical part. 2009 DR-Z 400S. I am assuming that the stock turn signal is a bulb and these are LED.

Might need a flasher relay (usually people get install them when switching from stock to led) so I would assume you'd need to install one in this case also.

Yup, its actually a relay with a resistor built in, I think the TT store carries the nice plug and play ones. All it does is add resistance to the circuit to account for the lower draw of the led bulbs. Without the resistor your blinkers will work fine, they will just be blinking at that fast cracked out rate because the low draw makes the flasher think you have a bulb out.

Maybe someone who has used them will post a link. I just let mine blink fast, it ranks pretty low on my priority list.

I agree, I just let mine blink fast as well. I actually feel it's safer, def see the flash easier.

I have these installed, pretty straight forward, make sure the LEDs are in right.

I have mine taped into a switched hot wire and using the as running lights.

I also have a LED flasher due to LED turn signals and no longer have hyper flash, however there is now a delay when I turn on my signals.

Hey all,

Thanks for the feedback. Much like most things in life, I just jumped in. Cold winter day so open the garage doors and work on the bike. Everything went together well but you learn as you go and the the second one went together twice as fast as the first. As suspected, ended up with hyper lights. I might get the LED flasher when I do the back lights, but for now, it does not bother me.

To address Katothepumpkin, I will say the plastic does seem a bit flimsy and we will see what happens in time. The good news is that the shield is pretty easy to replace. The bad news is that most of the replacement shields seem to be more than I paid for the whole set up. The actual protection part(metal) is pretty robust and I have a hard time believing that they will get damaged in a normal fall.

I am glad that the left side stalk had a guide on it. As I was bolting it back on the bike, I noticed that it bolted into a pinch clamp at the top of the fork tube. Not sure it was necessary, and I was going to replace the bolts for aesthetic purposes, but I could have easily not used the bolts and not torqued the clamp down. That would have been a doh moment.

In regards to the LED turn signal relays. What i personally did was just de-pin the two wires going to the factory turnsignal relay (it's a large relay with kickstand clutch switch integrated)
And wire in a cheap relay from superbrightleds.com

relay url:  https://www.superbrightleds.com/moreinfo/motorcycle-accessories/lf1-s-flat-universal-motorcycle-electronic-flasher/787/842/

Best part about that particular relay is the minimum load is almost nothing, so will have a slow blink rate no matter what.

The LED flasher that fits our bike is like $12 on eBay and is plug and play.

FYI, the powermad mirrors don't work with these hand guards.....just found that out lol.
