Powercore 2 VS Powercore Shorty 2

Recommended Posts

My bike came with an fmf pipe with the stock silencer on it. It's lacking power at the top end I'm assuming the stock silencer doesn't help the situation. I hear the shorty gives more low end power than the standard Powercore 2 but will it give more top end than the stock? Please don't post up dyno sheets because I'm ignorant and don't know how to read them haha. Just by the seat of your pants how do these pipes feel? Thanks.

It's an 06 yz250 by the way.

Bad assumption. The OEM exhaust is designed for MX racing. Power available everywhere. If you add a shorty you will boost low end power and snap, increase your noise dramatically, and will reduce top end power.

How is your jetting? Reeds? Cylinder? Piston and rings condition? Power valve working properly?

If you wanted to make a exhaust modification to get more top end then keep your stock silencer and get a Pro Circuit Platinum pipe and then make jetting changes if necessary.

Piston is brand new cylinder was deglazed and the crosshatching was still clearly visible and it makes a ton of compression. So that's all fine fam. The power valve is working properly as far as I can tell. When I had it apart it moved freely for half of the action then tensioned the spring for the other half and sprung back into place. The linkage was free of slop. I an guessing its slightly rich because its so warm out but it never fouls plugs or anything. The reeds looked brand new. Nice and thick with no chips at the end. The bike pulls very hard all over the place its not like it isn't making a ton of power, nothing to suggest there is a problem, I just would like the power to come on a bit later. Trust me I wouldn't dare put on a performance part before checking to make sure everything is working as it should. I read a review in mxa that described the power delivery of the stock pipe exactly as it feels to me. Also I had an 05 rm250 that had a full FMF setup and the power delivery was exactly how i like it, higher up in the rev range. I know. Different engine but still. I'm not some stupid rich kid dying to throw money at my bike so I can show my friends my badass exhaust pipe I'm on a fairly tight budget. I want it to perform slightly differently to suit my riding style to make me faster around the track. So the power core 2 silencer would seem like the right choice no? Thx.

Power Core 2 is about the same length as the 06 OEM silencer so unlikely it would affect much. Try the Pro Circuit Platinum pipe. Takes from low and adds harder mid and screaming top end power.

Hey did you ever get a silencer for this bike? How did you like it compared to the OEM?  I am in the exact opposite situation. My bike (2011 yz250) came with the OEM pipe and an FMF shorty and I want to replace it with a stock silencer because I like keeping it all original and I want it a little quieter.  I was hoping to find a 2011+ silencer to swap with.

The Pro Circuit pipe is a piece of junk compared to the stock. Tried them all. DEP is the best. My opinion anyways.

I have a 2011 stock silencer but I'm in Canada.

For best power at wide open and also high revs, these thoughts come to mind ....

Air filter. Clogged?

Spark plug. Old or fouled?

Main jet size. Too rich?

Spark timing. Too advanced?

Power valve. Stuck closed.

Assuming you don't have the FMF gnarly pipe or a muffler with a restrictive spark arrestor then I'd ignore the exhaust until the more important things are checked off.
