Drz 400 s best performance mods

Recommended Posts

Just wondering what everyone's opinion is on the best performance mods. I am thinking about doing the 3x3, the jet kit and maybe tailpipe or full exhaust. Is it worth it to spend the money for exhaust. Do you feel a big change other than sound. Trying to keep it cheap but what would be the best bang for the buck

what bike sm s or e

where and how do you ride ?

for me rejet w JD and 3x3 mod, tires (st legal knobs) and suspension set up for me handlebars and stock exhaust allows me to ride some street and mostly offroad with great reliability and low maintenance.  its not gonna beat a real dirt bike or street bike but does everything i want and quietly too.

Yeah! Do the 3x3 and jet it. If you're riding off-road and above 160 lbs., Re-spring it for your lbs.

Are you tall? Maybe some risers and a different bar is in order.

If you're not comfy with the riding position and/or have little control, extra power is almost meaningless. For me, anyway.

Bigger pegs too!

Everyone is different. I always try to mix performance upgrades with comfort ones.

For me:

1) full pipe

     A) jetting

     B) 3x3

2) fat bars

3) lower seat (I'm old and short)

4) hand guards (see above)

5) DOT knobs

You can forgo the seat, bars and tires depending on your body and your riding preferences. I highly recommend a full pipe, 3x3 and jetting. (a slip on will help save some weight, but the header is very restrictive, so it is worth getting the full system. If you can't swing that, you can open up the end cap on the OE muffler) Hand guards are up there, too. Saves money on levers and doctors bills if riding off road a lot.

I mostly ride street. I'm not tall but I weigh 200. Should I set up the suspension differently. I ordered renthal jimmy button bend bars I hope that should improve my ride a bit. I think I will do the 3x3 mod and jet kit and won't mess with exhaust yet.

Best performance mods:

1. FCR carb (from stock Mikuni on my SM)

2. Seat Concepts Seat

3. Good Tires

4. Steel braided front brake line

I bought a Yoshi RS-2 exhaust system, sounds good uncorked but I'm not sure if the performance gain is there.

Handle bar risers tend to mess with the ergonomics of the bike (sit further back, different foot position).

Changing the gear is a waste unless you want to give up top speed (either way you change the gear ratio, top speed always suffers).

Yeah, I would definitely do that or have that done. Spring for your weight for sure. It's going to sit up right in the stroke and handle much better. You have more control. Dirt bikes and dual-sports have such long suspension travel that it's IMO absolutely necessary to have springs that carry the rider's weight in the ballpark.

Then I'd also go for a suspension revalve, street riding or not. The DR-Z is heavy, and top-heavy, and it's not really damped enough - in other words the suspension's hydraulics don't "push back" enough - so the bike wallows and rocks back and forth a lot. It's easy to see when you see a stock DR-Z going over the same stuff as a better-suspended bike. It "boats". A revalve will again bring stability, agility, and predictability.

It's fun to ride them without, but it's a mod that I would always, always do.

If I do the 3x3 now and jet kit will I have to rejet again if I add exhaust later

Yes - but you just have to change the main jet, and the appropriate jets are included in the jetting kits.

Is this something I can do and is there a forum/instructional vid that could tell me how to do it.

You can change the springs yourself but unless you are a suspension wizard I would leave the mods to the valve stacks to a pro.  Tires and carb are pretty easy to do, if you search there are a lot of threads dedicated to putting the FCR on and what the jetting should be.  I say carb before pipe but it really doesn't matter.

I see your are new here, have you read the FAQ sub-forum, lots of good stuff in there. https://www.thumpertalk.com/forum/215-drz400-faq/
