XR600 fork swap worth doing?

Recommended Posts

Found a couple on Ebay... there's a guy in Cali. that's got quite a few for $50 or so... not sure how that works, i've never ebay'd before.

youll have to sign up and make an account.  and buy it now is pretty straight forward too.  not to much different from getting something on amazon.

also I edited my post with some link to allthe parts you need on ebay.   a complete front wheel with speedo, brake carrier, front  axle.  check it out

Thanks for the links... besides the CR wheel I already have those parts.

I don't want to spend $$ on an unknown part only to have to buy another piece to make that one work.  If EMIG offers a turnkey product and one stop shopping I might be better off going there the first time and being done with it... I just want to ride it.  I might put the originals back on so I can ride until it comes together.

In the end it'll only be about $125 more than I was looking to spend...

If the Emig axle is in your budget just do it. I don't know how important a Speedo is to you but if you don't need one a cr wheel and axle will be an off the shelf bolt on solution for cheap.

I stayed away from eBay for a long time. it just seemed over complicated with bidding and shipping and PayPal and whatnot. now I don't know how I built projects without it. basically any OEM used part just shows up at your door! just look closely at pictures and seller ratings and you will be happy.

I think I might try the Ebay thing out... i'm already a Craigslist addict, why not have another place to look.

I've got the CR axle, will the XR caliper work?  blah, blah, blah.   I'm just done with this project and if it costs me a few bucks to be done with it then it's worth it.  I agree... the EMIG axle is stupid money but they've got it and I want it done and if it's part of the "kit" is it a one off?

If I can pick up a wheel for $50 or $60 with the 240mm rotor than i'm in business... most sellers don't state size and the couple i've seen have been 270mm... will my rotor & caliper work? if not, there's another bracket I have to buy.  Just don't want a bunch of adapters for everything and tired of it sitting here and not getting ridden.  It likes to be started about once a week and it's been sitting in my living room too long.

The caliper should work, they used the same model of caliper forever on a ton of different bikes. As long as it bolts to the forks it should work. Worst case scenario you have to buy a 97 era cr250 caliper (like 25 bucks on ebay)and then you will have an entire cr front end so you know it will all work. Im pretty sure your caliper is the same though.

It says 02 earliest but i bet the brackets are the same. Worth buying, trying and maybe returning unused if it doesnt fit. These brackets work. I have one on my suzuki rmz. Let me know if it works. I have 97 cr250 forks on an xr im building now. I had a nice crf rim with a wave rotor. I put that on. But 270 would be cool. Especially cause i got a drum brake on that xr...88

@Notorious...  There's another $60 for that bracket and add another $60 or more for a wheel and it adds up to half of the axle and if I have to buy another part...

Trust me... I don't want to drop $250 on an axle... that's ridiculous but I want a solution more than I want to save money at this point.  I don't have a bottomless bag of money to spend, but at the same time I don't want this to nickel and dime me to death with misc. part after misc. part... and I don't want to be working on it next year.  If that's the price of admission, I'll have to suck it up or shelf the project all together.

I work 6 days a week, make good money, have virtually zero bills beyond the basics, and i'm single... if I don't buy this, what else will I spend it on... beer, tools, truck parts, ammo, trashy women? LOL

Ok, caliper part numbers are not so conclusive. The calipers for both bikes are sold as sub assemblies with pads, hardware and everything instead of the actual caliper having its own part number to compare. The sub assembly pn's are close but not an exact match. This could be something minor like the xr and cr coming from the factory with different pads or bolts or it could be that the calipers are slightly different. As an example, early xr600 and xl600 calipers are interchangable but have different part numbers because the xl600 caliper has cast-in heat dissipation fins and the xr doesnt. Otherwise, they are the same caliper.

In my limited experience with honda calipers, if the bracket bolts up they usually work fine. I expect that if you install a stock 97 cr250 front wheel, rotor and axle and use your xr caliper you will be in business. Given that you have the axle, all you should need is a wheel with rotor and maybe some new wheel bearings for good measure.

I am really happy with my galfer 270mm wave rotor, it came with the bracket.

I found Galfer for $240 and ProFactory for $120. Galfer comes with pads though. ProFactory is what i have on my rmz.

Ive got galfer rotors and steel brake lines on my other 600. Wasnt cheap.

Im not riding hardcore any more. Ill make the 120 kit last.

Youre a man of good taste though, BB

You give me too much credit Eric, I cheaped out and got the Galfer solid rotor not the floating rotor kit with pads.

Well i feel that!

Now the question...Floating or solid?

I have floating 298mm r1 rotors on my 600 now. Awesome. Dual 298mm rotors dual piston calipers.

My rmz is stock brakes. That ProFactory 270mm is floating. Ive only ridden it once and Im a timid rider nowadays just getting back from my accident. Only been on dirt once.

However. Back to solid vs floating...my 600 with the r1 front end is what i crashed. On the side of the rim with a nasty scratch. One of the floating rotors HUBs was bent and the wave part that the brake shoe touches wasnt bent. Weird. Ok 200 more bux. But if it was solid itd bend too if a car ran over it.

Anyways. I have no need for the higher potential riding a floating rotor will enable. That galfer setup you have is real nice. I gotta steel line up front already too. I dont think Galfer.

Ill probably get that same rotor you have. I have Galfer on my street 600. I should Galfer up the dirt 600 Im building. Im not a fan of the drum rear. It works fine. Strong by hand. But Im less aggressive in dirt right now. Thanks for the ebay site. Like i said. A man of good taste.

  • 2 weeks later...

After reading this thread I figured I would rebuild my KYB 46U. I keep finding conflicting info on how much fork oil yo put back in them. Do any of you have experience with these? I was hoping the spring would have a rate stamped on them too, but I didn't see anything. I need to get these back together. Does 90mm from the top sound right?
