Drilling required for RT Gold Valves? and what do the bleeds do?

Recommended Posts

Can't find anything in the instructions about drilling of the Gold Valves but it is mentioned in the online Valve Settings when I type in my personalized code:  Compression Gold Valve Piston Bleed Hole (Metric and Number Drill - drill piston if not pre-drilled): 1.3mm (#55)

Although I'm very confident that I can take care of the spring install without issue, I'm starting to think I may be a little over my head here with the GV install if drilling is required...  Don't want to mess this up.  If it is required, I might just send the spring and valve kit back to RT and pay them to do it - sounds like it's a pretty affordable affair and since we're about to get buried with more snow and ice, the timing might be perfect...

Sorry, can't help you there buddy.  I sent my forks to Race Tech and they did the work.  I felt like I would be in over my head too on the forks although the shock was a piece of cake.  Maybe someone here can help you before you send them in.  Good luck and keep us informed!

With a 22 month old and 5 week old to contend with, making time for lengthy mods is not an easy thing to do.  Directions on the valve install are already pretty complicated (but look doable).  I'm not going to mess with drilling of valves though, as a machinist I am not.  Would rather spend the $, save the time and have this done right, especially if the turn around is pretty quick.

For sure.  Looks like we're going to get hammered with snow on Tuesday here in MA.  If that's the case, it means snow day for me (I'm a teacher), so no school.  I'll use that day to either remove the fork and send it out to RT or commence with the valve and spring install myself.

From the bit of research I've done, looks like the required drill bit (if drilling is indeed necessary), is a fairly uncommon one, so that would only add to the process I'd rather not undertake.

I personally hadn't heard of any drilling of the Gold Valves for this bike from what I've read, but who knows? Maybe you can call Race Tech support tomorrow if someone else doesn't chime in on this today.

My guess is that the valves are drilled to the correct size based on the info you provided when ordering. Drilling would be for you to fine tune if they did not perform to your expectation or you want to change something.

Just my thoughts as I too sent my forks in to be built.

Yes you have to drill bleed holes. My sheet says 1.3mm bleed on both the compression and rebound.

Does it specify exactly where to drill those holes in the sidewall of the valves?  There's zero instructions on how to do so in the paper work they send along.  I spoke with CS over the phone before purchasing this set and they told me the work would be very straight forward as per instructions.  I guess that's not the case.  I would have forgone the valves all together and just purchased the spring kit had I known drilling would have been involved.  Springs alone would have been fine for the time being.

I'm waiting on Chris to supply a picture before I proceed.

So I take it you haven't installed the valves yet either? Did you install the spring kit or waiting to do it all at once?

I've rebuilt the right fork leg with new skf fork seals, fork bushings and new oil.

I have the left fork leg disassembled waiting to be put back together. I'm just waiting on Chris to send me a picture showing where to drill the bleed holes.

Just apoke with CS at RT. FYI, they said that the valves should come PRE drilled. Offered to exchange mine for a drilled set if they are not already drilled. Will check when I get out of work.

Massive snow storm coming our way out here in MA, so 1 - 2 days off from work ( I'm a teacher) = ample time to give the install a go if those valves are drilled.

This makes much more sense to me ...  ?
