Value of a 1984 Honda XL600R?

Recommended Posts

Probably in the wrong area but I tried the Dual Sport first.......so will say "sorry" in advance!

I am selling or trading my 2006 VMAX. In the trading option I have listed that I may trade for a DR or KLR 650.

Well....up pops a fellow with an absolutely pristine XL600R. Wants to trade and add some money in. No details yet.

The bike is great looking visually, only has 47-4800 miles on it, and has been kept under cover and inside a garage its whole life.

It shows it.

Minus any running issues or repair issues, what is something like this worth should I attempt to make a deal? Is it a good platform as a possible dual sport and daily run to work bike?

What should I look for if I go see it? It does spark my interest.

They are great bikes but are not worth much money. If you dont mind kick start only and older suspension, it may be the perfect bike for you. The motor in that old xl600 is the same engine platform that is now in the xr650l that is still in production. Some parts are getting scarce for these bikes so beware of any top end issues like unusual noises coming from the valve cover area or low compression. If the seller is willing to let you, it is pretty easy to check the valve clearances which can be an indicator of overall engine condition.

Prices vary quite a bit by region but a showroom quality unridden 84 would still only get about $1800 at very best. Nice looking licensed and ridable bikes are usually around $1200 in my area (Wa).

I saw one close to me in prime condition(restored) I believe asking price was around 2400. Dont know how close he got to that or if it ever sold. Another red, white, & blue one was around 1500. looked good in pics also.

Well...I asked what he is looking to get out of the bike.

The deal went cold when he wrote back that he would take no less than 3 grand for it.

Should have asked him if that included the Kevlar helmet, Joe Rocket jacket & pants, cruise control, stereo, heated seat & grips, LED cree driving lights, GPS, recklus clutch, steering stabilizer, SRC shark fin, SRC fork brace, & spare set of wheels, & lifetime Warranty?

^^ thats what I thought . I've never seen an XRl for under $2 , and that's rare. As for the XL , in my area , mint condition ones go for $2600 to $3000 , beat to shit and barely running go for $1200 to $1400. I live in the wrong state. not many ds bikes around so they go for a premium.   The other thing about "those 80's bikes" is they are now entering in the collector market so value is going up, to a point.

I bought a 2000 for $1400 but it needed some fixing, but that is really an unusual find. I am also working on a '87 that needs lots of fixing but, It will be a $1200 motorcycle when I am done. Everyone wants a dual sport but no one wants to buy a new one. That's why the used ones are holding there value. I do think the guy wanting $3000 is out of line

There was one locally that only had 1800miles and literally looked like it just got rolled off the showroom floor that sold for $3000 in less than a day here , but that was definately the most they could go for here and for the very few like that. If you think about it, in cases like that you are buying a new bike for 3k, although it is 30 years old.
