Temperature for starting a 2 stroke

I recently bought a yz 125 and I was just wondering what is the temperature where you should not start your bike at. One of my friends rides a ktm 85 and he says do not start your bike under 40 degrees Fahrenheit

Sounds like your friend is a regular genius.

 

 

Ambient temp doesn't matter. I rode mine in feb in < 20* temps. Just make sure your engine is warm before you ride it.

It all depends on what temp the bike is jetted for. If your friends bike is jetted for temps above lets say 60 degrees then yes running it below 40 would cause a lean condition. But two strokes can run in cold weather just fine as long as they are jetted for it.

The only thing I'll add is learn a bit about jetting.  You do need a bigger pilot and main for cold weather riding.  Generally speaking, every 30* F requires a step in size.  If you're jetted correctly, you can ride in as cold of weather as your body can tolerate.  I've ridden in 0* F before.  My body hated it much more than my bike!  LOL  Also, if you're jetted correctly, the bike will start just fine too.  Just make sure you let the bike get good and warm before you rip.  It does take a lot longer to get up to temp in the winter.

I have only had problems below -20

 

It is not 'is it bad' it is 'will it start...'

 

I have ridden places so cold, the engine was ice cold to the touch after an hour of riding. Pipe had ice that never melted off.

I don't race snowmobiles but have had a few, and I'm usually snowmobiling under 40! Idk who told you this but I think they are wrong.
