riding two up on a 650L

Recommended Posts

Looking for a 650L and was thinking it would be good for two up riding. My wife likes to go out for cruises with me. Looked at an '08 yesterday and the seat didn't look like it was going to be great for putting her on the back. Anyone ride two up a lot or know of an aftermarket seat for better passenger accommodations?

Thanks,

JC

I ride my tiny asian wife on the back all the time. Its not the greatest for me being shoved all the way forward, but its doable. We rode to the beach yesterday and got some coffee.

The trip was about 20 miles each way and not too bad. The worst part is the bike sags a bunch and is not set up for the extra weight.

My wife is small.but we go off road and have done road trips up to 400 kilometers in a day...

And when i say off road,,i mean goat paths and down 1 mountain trail we had no business going 2 up on...

She loves it,,i get cramped up,,i`m a big fella....but it`s doable and we have a blast....

As other people have said, you can do two up on the XRL, but there are far better bikes out there for that purpose. If you plan on taking your wife most of the time and are still looking for a bike that will do light trails and fire rds, the Suzuki Wee Strom or the Kawasaki Versys are far better choices IMHO, more power and less maintenance. Thumpers, one cylinder bikes are not at their best on the interstates, 2 up, cruising at 65-70 mph for long periods of time.

Thank you all for the feed back. I have my heart set on an XRL and my buddy has been nice enough to offer us his bike when we really want to go for a longer cruise. Eventually I will get a proper two up motorcycle but right now I am going for the XRL.

Good for you and welcome to TT. The XRL is a great, fun bike. I have a ZX12R that I barely ride anymore, always want to head for the woods now. A lot of ladies think they would like riding, then decide its not for them, bugs, rain(but some love it). I have a friend that had a woody for a new ZX11. Wife decided she liked the Concours back seat better, so thats what he bought new in 93. She went riding around 10 times. He still has that 1993 Concours, it has been a great bike though.

You will enjoy your new bike for many years. Even if you get a bigger bike for two up keep the 650 you will always find yourself jumping on it just for the fun factor. Corbin makes a great seat for it to help with long rides or two up.

I was thinking about getting a different rear shock for two up riding and a better seat. I know Corbin and other companies have good seats. I was also thinking of replacing the rear tool bag on the rear fender with a pillion pad for extra seat room for the passenger. Any thoughts on this would be great. I have a 04 Buell XB12R for my fun fast street riding but I bought my XRL for cruising a comfort! The XB is not a fun bike for long distance. LOL . I do have a 5.8 gal Acerbis tank, XR400 oil cooler. I still have my bike taken apart from last year so I was looking into two up riding options before I put it back together.

Guts Racing has seat covers and foam. The foam is available in regular and firmer (which is what I'll get next time my seat needs work), plus you can get a thicker (i.e., higher) seat as well. I had a local automotive upholstery shop put mine together.

I would go with Guts Racing over Corbin unless you can ride your bike to Hollister and have them match it exactly to your particular back side.

I had an '06 CBR1000RR, bought it brand new, and she loved riding on the back with me. Unfortunately the bike was stolen last June. For some reason I've really got the bug to go off roading and was getting tired of sport bikes, certainly was not comfortable for me when riding two up. The XRL seems like the perfect choice. Hopefully she will hop on the back with me once in a while and down the road I can get something else.

Great link I want to do a AK trip so bad. I am self employed so have money but no time or time but no money. Obama is not helping. Some day we will get it right and make it. Till then big kid with big dreams.

Same boat...self employed (machine shop) our government (state and federal) has done nothing to bring manufacturing back. I compete every day with china, Taiwan, and Korea grrrrrr.......

So now I take back country roads to work in the mornings and play on the fire roads, and logging roads on the way home.....my touring for now :D Only live once, and death is forever :worthy:

We sell and install industrial equipment like conveyors. This healthcare deal is killing us. Cost are out of control and everyone is afraid to death so they are holding back. I travel a lot so I take a bike along and see the lower 48. I have a place in northwest PA. that has great riding.
