XR 80 or XR 100 for daughter

Recommended Posts

Is this the same daughter riding the PW80 from your signature? If so, go with the XR100. She will enjoy the larger machine and will be ready for a challenge.

If she is a new rider, that when it get s harder. If she is really too tall for and XR80, she may not enjoy it. While the XR100 power may intimidate her at first, the better fit and handling should offset that. Just work with her more at the beginning on clutch and throttle control.

Both machines have room to "hop-up", probably more for the XR100.

I have triplet boys that are 11. They were on a PW 80 for about 2 years and now on the XR 100 sence June. Three boys and two cycles so the PW 80 still gets a lot of use. The XR 100 has been perfect for them. They can touch the ground both feet tip toes. They start it with the kickstand down standing on the left peg. As far as the power the PW 80 has more as it is 2 stroke. Learning the clutch went well 1st gear is very low. They can pop the clutch in 1st and will not kill it. Find wide open safe riding area when your kid is switching to a new/bigger bike. Good luck

Yes my daughter does ride the PW 80. She has been riding for about a year and a half but she is not an aggressive rider. She will have to learn the clutch - on either bike. She is just too tall for the PW .

My son is similar. He moved up from a PW80 to the XR80. Learning the clutch can be tough for some. Make sure that she feels confident on the size of the bike. If the bike feels too big and she is learning the clutch, it can be intimidating. I would say go for the bike she feels more confident on. Try to encourage the XR100 just because she will be able to use it longer. We went with the XR80 because he didn't feel confident with the higher seat on the XR100.

Another option is to purchase the XR100 and then get a set of wheels/tires for the xr80 (16/14 vs 19/16) from ebay. They are always listed and will bolt right on, lowering the bike for her to get started on. It will not be as low as an XR80 because the forks are 1.5"longer and the swingarm is 1" longer, but should make a reasonable difference. When she is ready to move up, put the original wheels back on and resell the XR80 wheels.

Go to the local dealer and have her sit on both. If she can touch the ground on the 100 go for it. She is only going to get taller. Both bikes are great fun and very much the same. The main difference I see is the 100 has bigger wheels a 19" up front and 16" in the rear. The 80 has 16" and 14 in the rear. This gives the 100 almost 2 inches more in seat height. If you do any mud or sand riding the wheel size along with more ground clearance really helps out. ?

Just bought my 10 year old daughter an XR 100 as her first bike. She is around 4'9" and it fits her alright and has room to grow in. I wanter to only buy one and not have to upgrade in a couple years. I put her on it Saturday for her first ride and she had no problems. She rode for around two hours and couldn't stop talking about it. Sunday morning she was up and ready to go again ?, so we went out for a couple more hours. if yopur daughter already has been riding i would defenitly go with the 100. Just my .02.

I wanted to buy a TTR125LE for my 11 year old daughter but the bike was too tall. She wanted the XR100R because her feet reached the ground. This turned out to be the biggest factor for her to become confident on the bike.

Covering the clutch was the first thing I stressed and when the time came (an accidental panic reving) she already had the clutch pulled in and the bike was under control.

Everyone loves the XR100R, my wife, son, daughter and myself. It is a fun bike and almost impossible to stall in first gear.

Yo DP !

How tall is your daughter? My son is 5'4" and he fit the XR100 decently but could tell he would outgrow too soon. That's why I ended up with the TTR125L. All this talk about the power of the XR100. ARE YOU KIDDING ME? The bike is really forgiving and you can lug it really easy. I tell ya Dan, my son had never ridden and learned to shift gears and learn the clutch in less than an hour. I have met you daughter, she is a bright girl, I would bet she will learn in 15 minutes or so. If she is too tall for the PW80 then I think the XR80 would be a mistake.

Woooo hoooo!

My girl is 11 also and she is 4'9". She loves her XR 100. Very easy bike to ride.

What are the main differences between the 80 and 100?

From the displacement the only differnce I can tell is wheel size. Everthing else looks the same.

How much taller is the 100? Maybe an inch. but go to the honda website and compare the 2 models

How about power and hop up potential? Plenty of stuff out there. Nothing like the TTR 125 but there is enough.

Thanks Guys

Looks like it is going to be the 100!! Went to the dealer and had her sit on the bikes. Flat footed on the 80 - tip toe on the 100. I figure I can lower the 100 a half inch - with the suspension - if I have to. There are lots of good almost unused xrs out there.

Now to hunt down a 65 for my son. ?

Thanks dan

Took the day off today and spent the morning with my daughter, walking beside her as she was learning to ride the XR100R. Today was the day of seeing all of the lessons come together. She started riding with confidence, shifting (up to 4th) and by the end of her ride was smiling Big Time. She even rolled over the small jumps and was getting up on the pegs.

After a while I got on my XR650R and rode behind her (couldn't stay with her on foot).

I went for a great ride alone on Arizona's primitve roads. Afterwards I started to put on a new back tire. Got the old tire off and decided the new one could wait until tomorrow. It's being warmed up by oil filled electric heaters. ?
