Pre-07 WR450 engine oil upgrade needed?

Ive been reading on the quad forums that the pre 07 450 motors benefit from this oil nozzle upgrade that yamaha offers.

Is that a problem with 2006 WR450s?

This is NOT a problem on the yamaha bikes. Who told you that it was? I don't know what goes on with the quads, don't care really. But in the two wheeled world, the yamaha wr450 motors, as they are, last FOREVER. You can literally go for thousands and thousands of hard miles with no problems. Most people do.

upgraded oiling sure doesn't hurt, and if you're on the street doing a lot of miles where splash lubrication may not be sufficient, it can save your wrist pin from siezing...or so I hear. There's a reason that Yamaha went through the extra expense and complexity to add a cooling jet on 07+...

That's not to say there is a problem but it would certainly increase reliability, and could decrease wear in certain adverse (for an offroad motor) conditions.

I know its the same motor. There are no widely report problems with the lubrication at the piston. Trust me, I bought a new wr450 in 2005 and rode it for 7 years. My buddy had one also. We kept our ear to the ground about problems. This wasn't one of them. But.. we didn't buy a dirt bike to put lots of street miles on it.

If you think its a good thing to do, then do it, But you are fixing something that isn't really broke on the wr450's ridden in the dirt.

Correct, it's not a wide problem but it is a potential issue if you ride calm street close to 100% of the time. This has been discussed here several times, I say if you're handy and going in anyway for something, to go ahead and do it. If not, and you know you ride it like you should, there is no reason to "upgrade".

But this has been discussed before, so it shouldn't be a huge deal.

Calling it a problem is what will get everyones panties in a bunch! Is it an improvement to the oiling system? I say yes. My bike see's some pretty extended slab riding in Baja from time to time, so I did the upgrade. To each there own, I guess.

Back in early 07 my dad and I each bought left over 06's. We spent the next year an half on the bikes. Its all we did. Both put over 14K miles of Baja and So Cal dual sport rides etc. Never EVER a failure in the oil department or any other part of the bike etc

Glad to hear that Coop!! My well used/abused '06 just got stored down in Baja, to be ridden in Paradise for the remaining years of her life. Those WR's are incredible!!!

A stream of nice slippery, cool, refreshing oil spraying the bottom of my piston and wrist pin seems worth the time and money.. One less thing to worry about, there have to be issues or Yamaha wouldn't have added it to the balance challenged model and the newest WR's. Am I afraid to ride my scoot without it? Nope.. But its getting it done this winter when I have a non honey-do weekend.

Remember the five valve Yamaha was built to race motocross and any other use is an adaption for it, I assume that the engineers who designed it were looking to save weight and assumed shorter overhaul schedules than any of us would consider, just happens that it is a very durable engine.. Lucky us, but I don't push my luck for a cheap upgrade. Plus I get to run a milling machine! Whoo- Hoo, hold my beer and watch this!!!

I don't see the point, the 450 is bulletproof.

A quad weighs more and puts more strain on the motor and the average quadiot doesn't do much maintenance.

FWIW if this was an issue, you'd see a lot of threads about it. I dont see hardly any...
