!08 YZ450F Plated!

Im thinking about getting a yz450f plated on a trade, how in the heck did this guy get a plate on this thing. How do you think the reliability of valves etc on daily driving this bike would be.

The only way that would have been possible aside from bribery or some other form of government corruption, or illegally using the plate from some other bike, is to have plated the bike in some other state, then bring it in more than 6 months after it was registered for street use there.

The YZ450 would definitely not lend itself to daily driving. Because of the internal ratios, you'd be over 6000 RPM at 65 even with 15/45 rear gearing. If you changed to the WR trans, you would bring that down quite a bit to around 5200.

Then, there's the whole issue of the electricals.

On a somewhat related note, my friend street rode his 08 YZ450 - albeit a bit illegal in his redneck woods part of the world - and as indicated the rpm and gearing eventually hammered the engine even with "proper" gearing. High speeds of 60 mph for long riding spells was just so loud and full of vibration and eventual. Didn't help that his maintenance schedule was a bit lacking...

The electrical issue is simply that the stock YZ450 ('09 and earlier) has NO provision for powering anything other than the ignition, and does not produce a power supply that can be tapped into. Aftermarket stators rewound with a lighting coil produce no more than 35-40w DC, reduce the energy available to the ignition, and have proven to be universally unreliable as to either the lighting or ignition circuits. The only alternatives are battery driven light systems or the very expensive upgrade to a WR450 charging system (~$1000) which involves changing out the crankshaft.

So there is no aftermarket company selling a stator??? Ive found a few stators for sell. The bike has a battery driven kit on it now.

I think this has been gone over a number of times before. As grayracer said, it's a no go without the WR parts swap. I don't believe the quad stator is a direct swap either as that probably would have been an option long ago. Total loss battery systems are the way to go for that bike and it's not necessarily a bad thing. Buying a few lith ion batteries is about the same costwise as a new stator/reg-rec. If you have a 10-12 YZ450 you are in business as it has the power and you can get a harness and handlebar switch from Baja Designs for about $15. Keep the light switch off when kicking over the bike and keep the output under around 40-50 watts and you are golden.
