Handguards

Hi All,

Spent last night looking through the forums for input on Handguards... what I've been able to determine is that Cycra is the way to go.. what I havent been able to determine is the mount setup to go with on a stock 2009 wr450... some say side triple mount, others say it wont work and get u-mount, others say that wont work and get xyz...

Anyone have them that could shed some light on the best mount setup? Also.. their site is pretty confusing... which ProBend is everyone getting.. Classic, Enduro, etc.?

Thanks

I have the classic style w/bar mount but run the small shields. Very strong even if you meet a tree head on. :busted:

I know you didn't ask, but i bought Tusk wrap-arounds, and I can say that i would probably go with Cycra if I need to buy handguards again. I had two pretty hard crashes on both sides, and both of the sides bent pretty good. I was able to bend them back, but no the strongest guards out there.

I have cycra tripleclamp mount on my wr and love them. I also have cycra bar mount on my yZ. no problems with either yet. I was going to do the triple clamp mount on the yz, but couldnt find them and i havnt been disappointed.

I had the triple clamp mount for years and it finally broke. I would not recommend the triple clamp mount because:

it will not take the side load when you drop your bike on a rock and the hand guard transfers a lot of side force directly into the triple clamp mount. the mount bends and you will be constantly bending the hand guard and mount to keep things lined up.

Also the triple clamp mound did not work well with my Scotts Sub Mount. the high handle bar position with the triple clamp mount caused the hand guards to be pulled down in front to connect to the triple clamp. this exposed my knuckles even with the larger enduro shields.

I now have the bar clamps with the pro taper bars. The install did require some fiddling since the clamps are tapered but once i got them and the hand guard all bent and adjusted into position they are very solid. There is very minor interference with the brake hose as it leaves the master.

The CRM's look interesting and I might consider them if I was in the market for new.

If you are even thinking about Flexx Bars in the future and have the (massive) budget for them then they make a special system for flex bars.

I bought the CRM kit for my 2011 wr450. Could not make them fit well enough so I called Cycra and they exchanged my CRM mounts from the kit to the u-clamp mounts. I should be getting them this week to finish up the job. I will post a follow up when I get them installed.

Dang...1 hr too late... I went ahead and ordered the CRM kit.... hopefully they will allow me the exchange as well if I also have issues. This will be on stock bars

Cycra Pro-Bend with U-clamp mounts give me the most flexibility.

I have the Tusk hand guards with the Cycra triple clamp mounts. I am very pleased with the combination. My 2007 WR450f is street legal so I have the LED turn signals mounted in the plastic gurards that mount on the aluminum hand guards. Many crashes and everything remains straight and nothing broke including the turn signals.

Not to hijack the thread, but how did you get your Ca plate. I have mine registered in AZ with a plate but couldn't get in transfered over here.

Just curious.

Something to consider if you are wanting the strongest mounting system possible is to tap the ends of your handlebars and get a bolt that will thread into them. I put steel helicoils in my bar ends and threaded a bolt into that. I could tighten the hell out of it because it is steel on steel. I used to have to tighten those bar end bolts with the standard expanding bolt system most handguards use about every other ride or so, but since I have installed helicoils I have not had to re-tighten them and the guards DO NOT move even in the gnarly crashes I have had. It's the only way to go with any full wrap handguard IMO.

Somewhere on here is a thread about how I did it. Nothing special. Just got the kit hooked up and took the bike to the local CHP office and they did the VIN inspection and completed the form then took to the local cycle shop and had them do the light inspection and completed their form and then took all paperwork to local DMV along with the old title and registration paperwork and insurance papers all neat and in a folder (I was told that helps) with my fingers crossed. Walked out with a plate and got my title in the mail in about 2 weeks.

I had the Cycra CRM's on my WR for about two weeks. They suck. They didnt fit well, and clogged up a TON of room in the cockpit area.

I switched over to the tripleclamp mounts and LOVE THEM. VERY rigid, theres no way the front end can get cocked out of alignment, and they are tough as nails.

Only downside is the side mounts dont come with longer pinch bolts- you'll need to go buy some yourself.

Well.. here is my report... CRM was just not happening. On the clutch side I had to move the lever in quite a bit just to fit them and when I did the adjuster rubbed on the guard.

The brake side was a worse. The master cylinder hit the mount and prevented it from mounting up. Only way I could get it to even fit was to twist the front brake up/down to a angle that allowed the lever to be exposed thus making it vulnerable.

Sooo.. I just emailed Cycra. Hopefully they can help me out and point me in the right direction.. would hate to have to pay a shipping/restocking fee at RMATV for a product that just wasnt fitting.

look into the fastway fitt system.

I made the mistake of getting the CRM too, my issue was the clamp was right above the fork cap and and it interferred with it, not even close to fitting. This was on an 05 so the triple clamps and bar mounts may be situated slightly different. I exchanged them for U clamps and they worked great.

Did you buy direct from Cycra? I'm wondering if they will take an exchange from a different vendor.

That was my experience with the CRM's too. They fit like crap, and once you did actually get them on, they interfered with the levers BIG time. I had to cut my levers [which I HATE], and trim the rubber boot off the front brake line, so it wouldnt be in a constant bind against the MC. Also, the clamps completely blocked access to the clickers/air bleed.

The build quality was excellent though, they use beefy materials, and everything is very strong.. they just dont fit worth a crap.
