Fork interchange and suggestion

I really want to take advantage of newer technology on my 426. I have read that 2006 triples will bolt directly to the steel 426 frame with very little issues. I also know that the 2006 forks have an offset on the axle lug to compensate for the wider triple clamps. Here's my question- What year/model (250, 450 or ?) will slide into the 2006 triple clamps? What is the better year forks? I have read that the 2007 forks are better than 2004-2006, which is better than my forks, but the data stops there and I don't know if 2008 and on are better, or if they even fit 2006 clamps. Spacers are an easy fix, but any brake system changes may cause fiduciary consternation (I'm cheap).

Any information or suggestions would be appreciated. Oh, last question- My 426 is a 2002 model, and I understand that 450 shocks are the same up to a certain point (within a couple of mm's). What year stock 450 shock is the best?

What year/model (250, 450 or ?) will slide into the 2006 triple clamps?
2006 forks are the only ones that correctly fit the '06 clamps. If you want to use '07 forks, use '07 clamps. They will fit your frame the same as the '06 does.

'08 and later forks require the use of the complete front brake system from an '08 or later. The '07 was not significantly different from the '06 except for outer tube diameters and valving. Either one is a very good fork. The '04 fork was a 48mm version of the same fork you have now, and the '05 was the first twin chamber KYB fork; good if you rework them, but they need work. Stay with the '06 or '07.

'05-'08 was one version, the '08-'09 was slightly refined and slightly longer. Either of them can be set up to work extremely well.

Thanks, Gray. Any cross-pollination between 250 and 450? A complete set of 2007 250 forks went for $200 on ebay last night, but I wasn't sure if the 250 and 450 had the same generational changes or if the 250 forks would fit my application. Also, I read somewhere that the offset was reduced with the 2008 triple clamps, or was that simply moving the axle aft by 1 mm? Any chance of pressing in the proper stem and using the 2008 triple clamp for 2007 forks?

The 250F fork is, I believe, about 12mm shorter, which can monkey with your front end geometry. The 250 2T fork is generationally identical year to year, but may be of a different length, not really certain. They would certainly have the wrong springs and valving for your 426, so unless you plan to address that during the swap, pass.

Gotcha, thanks. Now to pinch those pennies even harder...
