Radiator Gaurds

And we all know how much you crash !

Bonzai :)

You can knock me down, but you can't shut me up! :)

Sure you can.....The Shroud bolts thru the guard to the Radiator via an 8mm bolt and spacer on the back side.

Bonzai

Actually I think (it's been awhile and I don't have my bike here in front of me) the shroud mounting point is part of the guard or was an extra piece that is attached to the guard and replaced the original mounting point. If you think about it, this would be a better arrangement anyway since side impact forces on the shroud need to be directed to the guard and not transmitted directly to the radiator.

Either way, the shroud still mounts up just like it did before, although you may have to trim just a little bit of plastic from behind the shroud to get a nice fit to the guard.

Actually, Actually, (On the Devol) the Mounting point for the Shroud is part of the Radiator, The guard has a cutout area to allow the connection to the original radiator mount. On the back side of the shroud there is now a 1/2 inch rubber gromet installed on the (replacement) bolt. This grommet is designed as a shock absorber in the event of a hard landing.

Bonzai :)

Interesting. I'm certain that mine (on an '01 WR250F) does not have any special grommet and uses the original bolt. I think the original shroud mounting point was part of the stock plastic guard and does not mount back up with the new guards (at least not without some modification). Mine were trashed (probably from taking all that side impact through the shrouds) and ended up in the trash can.

Stand-By for Photo.....

Anything Else?

We should re-title this thread - "Everything you ever needed to know about Radiator Guards"

:D:):D

Okay, now, let me apologize and clarify here. I did not mean to refute your information, YAMAKAZE. No insult intended. Sorry. :)

What I stated in my last post is true about MY bike (01WR250F) and MY Devol guards. I believed you about yours and I thought it was interesting from the point of view of an obvious difference between our two bikes. I also suspected that the newer 426 might differ from yours as well (and may be more like mine).

I just checked Parts Fish for an 01WR426F to confirm this and it does show the shroud bolting to the plastic fin piece on the radiator:

Go with the Flatland racing. I have the Devol and am not happy with them the 2001 has a bigger Rad and the shroud mounting is different then the older models. Devol uses a gay little bracket to mount the shroud to the guard that is supposed to be held to the guard by two 1/4 20 screws. Mine has got to be drilled wrong because there is no way the shroud will reach the mount I tried everything I could think of and have even posted of my problems here and nobody could help. Got the standard answer from Devol "you are the first person to ever have this problem. Your brand new never crashed bike must have bent radiators on both sides" Their customer support sucks. Ended up moving the gay bracket back and redrilling to make them fit the shrouds sick out like Dumbo’s ears.

Cuda i have an 02 wr426 my devol rad gaurds fit fine,as to your problem with devol you are far from alone from customers to suppliers and others in the business ie the guy who now does my suspension instead of devol, there customer support sucks.they sold me linkage for a 97 cr when they knew i had a 98 which they installed.well a month later i decide to grease all my bearings and find the link was about .050 from breaking through NICE out on the track huh. They said they would give me credit but no money back SWEET sell me crap knowing it.Anyway i live a few miles from them and am a machinist and being in the business i hear they dont pay suppliers either.REAL NICE BUNCH! ANOTHER TT ALERT BUYER BEWARE FROM DEVOL!

:)

Ratbiker,

Maybe you could answer a question for me. The bracket used to mount the shroud to the guard is yours drilled parallel to the rear support bracket? Mine is offset forward about an inch. I tried to pull the guard back to shroud but it wont reach the way I have them now the guard is twisted back at the bottom and there is about an inch and a half clearance between the rad and guard. My brother in-law has a set of Devol’s on his XR 650 and they fit nice. I think I just got a bad set. When I talked to Devol they had no idea what I was talking about. I will never do business with them again.

Nevermind, I don't know what i was thinking! Maybe i wasn't thinking?

Here's a tip ya'll may benefit from.

If you use the Devol's and the spacer was included to mount the shroud on the guard, remove it! It's only sticking your guards out further making the bike feel fat. It won't melt on the radiator , but if you're paranoid use a small washer as a spacer

If you use either the devol or flatland guards, trim the vertical plastic molding sticking out from the inside of the shroud, that touches the guards. Your shrouds will tuck in better making the bike feel thinner with some trimming. It would seem they would be weaker after you trim off this "support beam", but I have yet to permently crease my stock guards after at least 70-80 crashes.

I have long legs and the wide shrouds were banging my knees!

I tried pulling up the flatlanders web page but got nothing. Anyone have a correct web address or ph.# I have decided to go with these guards as opposed to the Devol. Just a little better design. Thanks.
