yz426 vin numbers??

Hi this is my first post!

I recently bought a 2002 yz426 off ebay!

Checked the frame numbers and engine numbers all looked pretty legit. well, im no expert but ive seen attempted restamp and its pretty obvious.

when ive gone to investigate further all information i have found says that the frame number should be 17 digits long like a vin number on a car!

my frame number which looks to be the same as engine number (which i cant see fully) reads *CJ01C-016722* which is only 12 long!

i got it off an established garage and they guy assures me the bike is fine as he knew the last owenr, but i just wanted to make sure before i take it out as i wdnt want the police to confiscate it if its hot!!

any imput wd be appreciated! as im clueless

You have a moral and legal duty to report a suspicious title situation. Not sure about Wales, but around here, receiving stolen property is a felony.

So your saying its sounds dodgy? I think I'm gonna speak to the shop first see if I can get my money back. Then ill report him.....

Don't report him, report the bike. Let the police decide who to investigate.

If the title does not have a 17 digit number on it, and/or that same number is not on the steering head, you should be concerned. Engines seldom ever are stamped with the full VIN number anymore.

Thinking about it more, I think the route for you to take is to take the bike back to the dealer and tell him you're uncomfortable with the situation, but that you will keep the bike if it passes inspection by the police, and ask if he's willing to go along with that. Then have the police meet you at the dealer with it.

Im going to ring yamaha with my concerns in the New year.

The police thing sounds like a good idea but cant imagine the police bothering to help me with something like this,, unless of course they nick me for handling stolen goods or something :-(

One thing that confuses me if its been restamped or something why put 12 digits? surely you wd put 17 as not to arose suspicion? seems silly to me, unless of course there is a decent reason for it!

Those numbers don't look right to me.

The police will naturally take into account the fact that it was you who called them. They won't help you with recovering your cash from the dealer, but I would feel safe in saying you'd be off the hook.

The reason is simple. Most crooks are stupid. They probably simply copied the engine number.

Unless Wales is unique importing their bikes...that is not a legit VIN by most standards. I do not see that being able to be registered. Unless you need registration for your riding areas I would not do anything with it except return it to previous owner if you are too worried....

FWIW..the stamping looks great but just does not look like a standard modern VIN.

Have you looked elsewhere for any other numbers?

The bikes locked away at my friends house at the moment tho i will look to see some other numbers!! i dont intend to get it registered anyway, just dont want to be riding a stolen/dodgy bike that i paid good hard earned money for!!

I couldnt see the engine number properly as the header was in the way but i have a feeling greyracer maybe onto something im sure it looked nearly the same as the frame number. They must have just copied it!! dumasses!

Once ive called yamaha and if they confirm my suspicions i hope this guy will give me my money back or at least swap it for something else

That stamping certainly looks like an original Yamaha stamping/engraving. Yamaha's just have a certain look to them and this example clearly looks real. It would be nearly impossible for an average guy to duplicate the font style. Also the paint looks OEM Yamaha. I agree the number sequence and amount of digits is odd compare to the 17 digits we are used to seeing. Is there a title or ownership document that matches these numbers? Look at another bike in Wales and see what the VIN number looks like on it.

DON'T PANIC

Mine is the same - I tried to figure it out and it didn't match anything I'd seen anywhere.

It is clearly not forged. As I've explained to many a shop keeper who won't take a Scottish Ten Pound Note, the idea of a forgery is to make it look the same as an original. It is also clearly not wiped or overstamped.

Is there a sticker on the frame rails under the seat? There's a number there that identifies the year and where it is from. Mine turned out to be from New Zealand.

I'll have a look at mine again when I get back and post you a pic - I'm in UK and it's in Saudi Arabia just now.

Grey, if it's like mine it's not the same as the engine number - I tried checking every online source I could when I got mine, but found nothing. I didn't speak to Yamaha direct, which is what I reckon he should try first.

  • ALL VIN numbers from before 1980 to date are ALWAYS 17 digits
  • NO VIN number ever has a hyphen

It needs to be verified, and if it's OK, some official record of that made and given to the new owner.

No arguments here - I just responded to your comment that dodgy types often just copy the engine number.

I also did read all of the previous comments, and I also searched my bike for a VIN and only found the same type of number as the original poster.

I also offer the CJ01C comment in the spirit of helpfulness such that we might figure out what the number on the frame means.

I also agree that it needs to be verified (for peace of mind if nothing else) but my view is that the bikes actually don't appear to have VINs on them, nor an apparently removed VIN, so either they were never formally imported to a country, or the number means something else.

I can understand the lack of a VIN in Saudi Arabia, but the UK is a different matter.

For the time being, though, I can confirm that I have the same number format as the original poster, so the answer is probably something to do with a missing VIN, or strange import route rather than this being a fake number.
