03 wr450 starter motor

just bought an 03 wr450, the electric start doesnt work so we took it out. when we tested it it was running in the wrong direction with very little power. i take it its knackered?

Not necessarily. It's running backwards because someone took it apart and rotated the magnet assy by accident. Try loosening the bolts and rotating the center secion 90 - 180 degrees. That should get it running the right direction. As for the low output maybe the brushes?
