YZ450F silencer

4 posts in this topic

I thought some of you that are always asking about the 08/09 silencers might like to see these pics. I took mine off and never started the bike with it and have carried it as a spare. I decided to modify it and remove the two baffles. I might try to bolt it on just to see how it works. As large as the diameter of the core is (a KTM 450F core I had on the shelf fit perfectly inside it) and as short as the system's length, it's probably pretty loud. I mainly just did this to have something to mess with. After it was put back together, it looked the exact same as it did before, just 6 ounces lighter, louder and with a straight through silencer. But if I need it as a spare, it should be able to be bolted up with the same jetting as my FMF Ti system.

Drill the welds and remove the inner cone. I used a small piece of another core and taked it on to cover these holes and to make sure the the strength.

Cut the cone off the end cap. The core slides all the way up, so no fit problems.

I'm surprised you didn't notice some improvement. The two cones have to be fairly restrictive. The silcone/glue holds both sides on pretty good, so I used a propane torch to heat up the ends a little which seemed to help them come apart after drilling out the rivets. I have a X/C race this weekend, and I may throw it on Sat during practice to compare between it and my FMF. It took about an hour, and is basically a free mod, so if it works well, it might be worth considering for those still running the stock can.

2 cones? sorry, missed that note. I just removed the outer one. I have repacking material sitting on the bench waiting to be installed. Think I'll remove that inside cone and see what happens.
