07-09 WR450 Shock Removal - Help Request

Hi,

I just checked my sag and I'm sitting @ 120mm.

So I think it's best to pull the shock out to adjust the preload.

From what I have read, the method for removal is:

1. remove the seat

2. loosen the lower subframe bolts and take the top bolt out.

3. take the shock bolts out and remove the shock through the top.

Sounds simple enough, but it sure doesn't look that easy.

Any other potential gotchas?

Another question:

if I need to take up 20mm of slack, any ideas much further I should compress the spring?:)

Leave everything on the bike. Take a large punch and a hammer, you can access the top rings beside the airbox. Loosen the top lock ring off with the punch. Now put on some gloves and start turning the spring clockwise. The ring will turn with the spring. If you're having troubles turning it throw a little penetrating oil on the threads. It will take a few complete revolutions with the spring to get that 20mm but it's easy to do and adjust perfectly. When done tighten top lock ring with punch and hammer again.

Only reaon to pull shock is to swap shock spring (or pull carb).

That worked! Once I got the lock ring to let go of the adjuster ring.

I owe you a beer or two Tribal, you saved my bacon.

So I ended up with roughly 17mm of free sag & 110 of race sag.

Probably need to drop 20lbs and check it again.

What are you guys running?

I run 100mm race which translates to 25mm of free sag for me.

Shoot for 100mm race, she'll corner alot better. Also raising the forks 5mm to the first line helps cornering heaps.

I drink Corona's, lol.

Forks - 2nd line on the cartridge is lined up with the top of the triple clamp.

I kinda misread on your free sag #'s :)

I would try taking a little more sag out, try running 15mm free sag. Obviously best case would be losing 20lbs off your bike or going up a spring rate.

You definitely need a stiffer spring. The stock springs are a 5.4 kg/mm rear and 0.46 kg/mm front.

My brother weighs 210lbs and we ended up with 5.8 and 0.48s. Sounds like you are inabout the same weight range.

Factory Connection powder coats their shock spring yellow which looks fantastic on the blue bikes.

So maybe .50's, cause I don't want to mess with rear again.

I love your solution to the problem. Don't change the bike.... It's you that you decide to change! That's awsome.:)
