Better wheelie bike? YZ450 aluminum or steel frame

Since it was too wet to ride at the track this weekend my friend and I did some dirt road riding. Much of this riding was on one wheel. My 450 is an 04 and his is an 06. Both our bikes are bone stock.

Is it my imagination or the 04 seems to have a much better balance point. Of course this might be because the 06 seems so much longer. My rear axle is in about the middle and his was almost all the way back - ok that only makes for about 1/2 inch.

2004 YZ450 Wheelbase 58.5 in

2006 YZ450 Wheelbase 58.9 in

Just wanted to see what anyone else thought about their one wheel experiences on both bikes.

FYI - his bike has about 120mm of rear sag and mine has about 80mm which seems to help the balance point.

According to my son, who has taken over the long wheelie department, one's as good as the other.

My all time favorite was my BSA B50MX. That bike was a unicycle.

I can't comment on the 04, but my 06 YZ450F is the easiest bike I have ever wheelied, period! I only rode 450cc dirt bikes a few times (and only a few minutes each time) prior to buying my bike, so I wasn't really used to the feel or power yet. Still I was able to take it right to balance point and keep it there.....on my test drive! The engine is so smooth and the chassis is so well balanced that it seems to wheely all by itself.

Obviously I am a steel frame / 04 motor fan. I guess I was just looking for a one more area the steel frame bikes were just as good or BETTER at.

Z50 you can ride around for days on the rear tire (and not even blow the engine from oil pump cavitation) enough said.

I had one of those that I bought as my first 'big' dirt bike in 1979. It was a 1973 model. I trail rode it for a while, then bought a 1979 YZ400F (the yellow two-stroke, not the four-stroke) in 1980. I got the BSA running in 1989 and rode a couple of vintage hare scrambles on it, even getting 3rd in class and 9th overall at an AHRMA National.

Finally, last year, I gave it, in boxes and bags, to the son of the guy I bought it from. He was so happy, he gave me an old Maico 440. What a piece of junk! I listed it on eBay for $1, and would have gladly taken $1 for it. I got $611 by the time the auction was done.

P.S. OP, keep both wheels on the ground. I nearly completely destroyed the frame on my 1990 YZ490 looping out while doing the coolest wheelie I ever did in my life.

When I was a 145lb kid I had a YZ490. I don't think the front wheel ever touched the ground.

I owned a CR500 that had no trouble lifting the wheel either, but riding it for any distance fully balanced was nearly impossible to accomplish. The far more linear and incremental throttle response of the 4-stroke makes it much nicer, and I could ride the B50 up into 4th, and then for basically as long as I wanted to.

I had a Hodaka Dirt Squirt when i was 14, would be wheelying everywhere I went, &never really had a problem holding the front wheel up on anything else I rode. '81 RM250, '89 & '93 KDX, & even an old '83 XR350. Now at 50 years old, I have an '01 YZ426, & for the life of me, can't seem to find the balance point on this bike. Maybe MY center of gravity has changed over the years??

I have an 02 yz426f, and i have that exact same problem. i can not find the balance point either. and i have been practicing for quite some time too.. almost a year. :thumbsup:

I had no problems wheelying my 426 back in the day. . .

That being said who cares which bike is better the bikes are meant for racing not wheelying.

when i was 16 i fear from nothing, now i do ,and whieelies arnt as easy. especially after a few wheelis that went over :ride:

2 strokes is much easyer for me, as the bike wont fall down on you beacuse of engine brake.

it dosnt realy metter which bike u got if you know what you are doing and have good rear brake controll. but if you are just starting and have "no fear"(u might want to call it stupid), 2 strokes will be much easyer to lift the wheel , and keep it there(husqy360), and yes to crash aswell(my back did met the pavment on this bike), for the same reasons= lots of 2t power with no engine brake.

its alsow easyer to get the front wheel back up after it drops, compare to a 4t which if you drop the front wheel a little, your wheelie is done. :thumbsup:
