Help to convert a DRZer Plze take time to respond

I just changed my gearing to 14 and 51 on my 2001 DRZS and what a huge increase in performance.

When I bought this bike new, I could not imagine what you guys were talking about when you wanted more power and suspention . Now with a few years under my belt, I am starting to consider moving to another manufacture for more all around performance.

How can you compare with so many variables effecting owners bias.

I have experienced the slow migration from opening the air box, 12/44 gearing, installing new jets, and now the 14/51 gear change is getting me to the point where I need a suspension upgrade for my 230lbs. Did I mention the awesome increase in enjoyment with my new gearing? Its no wonder everyone has such major differences in power rating their DRZS. Hell If you asked me to rate my bike for power after these changes, I would tell you I have to start working out my arms to keep me on the damn thing. I love this, but will it ever stop. When someone is stating the superior trail capabilities of a manufacture, is it because they weigh 125lbs and forget about us big boys. I need a bike for a fat boy that thinks he is a kid again.

I need some help to make a decision as to what bike to turn to.

Priorities include:

Electric start

Low maintenance

More power for hill climbing tight trails

Suspension that doesnt bottom out with every minor jump

but of coarse I want a pleasant ride.

Any suggestions.

Suspension work!

In your sig you don't mention suspension mods?? At 230lbs? So if that's what's holding you up, just fix it. New fork & shock springs at least. Another whole new bike awaits just around the corner.

PS: Any bike'll need suspension mods with a rider of our weight, that's just the way they're made

exactly!i wiegh 200-220 depending on the time of year.suspenion set up is critical on a drz!

I hear you mate,trust me I hear ya ,but as they have already said it doesn't matter what you buy it'll need suspenion work to work properly for you, I belive you have the right bike for a while yet just get that supension done .As far as coming to an end of the modifcation road well I'll let you know if I ever get there .

Get the KTM! I used to have a drz400S. I now have a KTM 525sx. It is a HUGE difference. For you though, the 450exc or 525exc would be great! The KTM's feel so much lighter, are electric start, have a 6 speed, renthal fatbar handlebars, hydraulic clutch, etc. If you can afford it it is a MUCH better bike.

Ummm, am I wrong in thinking that 12/44 gearing is almost the same as 14/51???

e-start:less time kicking, more time riding!

I too am a former DRZ400S Rider. I did all the mods, gearing, airbox, jetting, stripped unnecessary parts, new tank, lights, etc. The engine performance was not that bad, but the suspension and the weight was awful. I now ride an 01 400EXC and I'm thrilled. The 35lb weight difference feels more like 100. The bike is very nimble. Also, it has a lot more power. I was very surprised by the power difference between the DRZ and the EXC.

Since I bought used, I was able to upgrade from my 00 DRZ to the 01 KTM for the same amount of money that it would have cost me to rebuild the suspension. I have no regrets at all.

12/44 is higher than 14/51 without a doubt

will be trying the 13 soon

still will pull 65 in the straights

Short and simple: A DRZ400E sounds like it would fit your' bill. I just traded mine, no fault to the Z for another step up toward a little more aggressive off road bike. I like to ride aggressively and do some racing, so the WR was my choice. You have to underatand what you want and can afford. Best of luck in your' quest. :)Dirtstiff

One of my buddies has a DRZ400E and I love riding his bike through the woods. He's got Yosh pipe, carb work, and suspension work plus BNG's. For trails/woods riding I'd take it over my WR's any day.

It does not do the crossover thing to MX/SX well at all.

Picking a new bike, to me, is about application and compromises. If I rode 90% trails/woods, I'd of bought the E model 2 years ago. I ride a solid 50/50 mix. Pure MX'rs were tossed out because of maintenance on 2 strokes and lots of clutching in the woods on the 4 strokes. It left me with a choice of trail bikes. I felt the WR did the most effective job of crossover riding. I'm to cheap to buy a new bike when I have a good scoot that just needs some tweaking to make it fit my application better. If your not offroad racing or mixing it up at the local track you'd probably be better served fixing your current bike and pocketing the cash you'd of spent on a new ride.

I just got a 2003 KTM 625SXC and I am very happy with it. I tip the scales at 235lbs and it handles my weight EASILY. It will wheelie in 4th gear and climb any hill you have the guts to climb. Comes pretty well equipt from the factory. USD forks, WP shock and forks, E start, hand guards, Magura tapered bars, hydro clutch, Brembo brakes, electronic speedo, enduro computer, competion exhaust and the list goes on. If you ride rough terrain, Plan on replacing the CV carb with a FCR41 or a Mikuni TM40 pumper carb.
