06 vs. 08 YZ450F Talon Front Hub Spacer Dilemma...Please Chime-in If You Know

Hi all,

I have a talon front hub (dissassembled) I bought used from someone who gave me all the parts for an 06 and 08 YZ450F. Here is a picture of the Talon center shaft (without the bearings) and 3 Talon front wheel spacers. Since I need to press-in the bearings, I would like to try to do this right the first time...

1. Which side does the longer end of the center spacer face? I believe it is the brake side, but if anyone knows for sure please let me know.

2. Which 2 spacers do I use (out of the 3) and which side does each go on. There is a long one (with a taper), a medium one (no taper), and a short one (no taper). I have a 06 YZ450F.

Once all this is together, I should have only one part left over...the spacer for a 2008 YZ450F.

I switched my wheels from my 2006 yz450f to my 2008 yz450f when i had them. The 2006 ran the long spacer with taper on the brake side and medium spacer on the off side... the smaller spacer is for the brake side on the 2008.. As for the internal bearing spacer, cant help have not been in ther before buit what you say sounds right and makes most sense.

I haven't had a talon hub apart in over a year, but if I remember correctly the longer end of the center spacer went on the brake side. It probably doesn't make a difference in reality though.

As long as the center spacer doesn't stick out past either bearing, it shouldn't matter.

Motojase316 - any chance you are mistaken about which sides the spacers go on? I am asking because the longest spacer with the taper has a really small shoulder on the inside compared to the other two, and when I set it on the potruding part of the center shaft on the brake side, it does not reach the inner race of the bearing which is no good. It reaches the inner race of the bearing on the opposite side of the brake. And the other thing is the smaller end of the taper is the exact size of the shoulder on the end of the Yamaha front axle, so it matches up well over there (opposite of brake side).

I have been trying to call QTM in Cali all week for tech help on this and they must be shut down till the first of the year or something...

Anybody else care to shed some light?

I'm not sure why this should be so difficult, especially if you have your '06 wheel. Set your original wheel on a bench, disc side down with the axle spacer in it and measure the distance from the rotor to the bench. Should be about 7mm. Then see which of the two shorter spacers puts the Talon rotor the same distance off the bench.

Either that, or trial fit the wheel. :moon:

The long spacer is rather obviously the right side spacer, and mounts as you said, with the small end against the axle shoulder.

Hey yeah that sounds right the taper end should match up with the shoulder on the axle, been a while now and a few bikes since 2006. I was supplied that tapered spacer with the wheels for the 2010 wheels i Just bought too. The dimension between the lugs on the bottom of the forks is larger for the 2006 versus the 2008. sorry about the mistake there.
