Fork work pricing

I recently had a new shop do some fork work for me and wasn't sure of the pricing. I paid $180 to have the oil changed, a seal replaced, and a chip that ruined the seal smoothed out on an yz450f 06 model. I brought the fork legs in. Is that steep? I've always done the forks on my road racing bikes myself so I really have nothing to compare it to. just wondering. Thanks

So then, for your $180, you got at least one seal, fork oil, and probably something like two hours of shop labor (@ $70-90). Not really too surprising, IMO.

because I'm in MN and I have 4 months of winter to do the rear shock. It will be done once there is snow on the ground. The leaky fork seal was more of a fix now so I can ride 3 or 4 more times before winter rolls in. Thanks

simple reseal and fluid change.... do them day in and day out for $50 plus parts and oil.... I see shops charg up to the price you seen and that is why I tend to be busy at times....

To do a proper service on the twin chamber forks takes a fair amount of time I would think most shops would flat rate it at 1.5 hours or so. On the other hand a mechanic that takes all the "short cuts" would knock it out in 30 min. and charge for the 1.5 - 2.0 hours. Sad but true....

...and a truly good mechanic could do the job right in an hour's time, and put the extra cash in his pocket. You get everything you bargained for, and he moves on to the next job. That's how it's supposed to work.

Gray, what do you know about this smartperformance fluid and their fork service? Do you use it? how does it compare to oil? Do you recommend it?

I ask because all of the posts here seem like a slaes pitch for the stuff.

I use the fluid, his "Del Taco" mid valve modification, and anti-cavitation base valve mods, dual IC springs, among other things. In the interest of disclosure, I should tell you that I get the stuff from him on a sponsorship basis, but I need to assure you that if Dunlop gave me free 739's and 742FA's, I would neither use nor recommend them to anyone. The simple fact is that Dave's stuff works, and works better than anything else that I have direct experience with. If it didn't, I wouldn't tell you that it did.

As far as his service goes, I do my own work using his parts and info, which he provides in detail on paper, and also over the phone or e-mail if questions arise. He's extremely knowledgeable regarding KYB stuff in particular, and his mind is not in any way restrained by conventional thinking. Those who do use his service generally think pretty well of it, so far as I've seen.

I'm not sponsored by dave and I'll say his suspension is way better than all the rest. He did my suspension on my 08 YZ450f, supple yet firm...

+1 on Smart Performance. Like Gray, I have the full Del Taco / Anti Cav set up. Both forks and shock have been revalved and I couldn't be more pleased. The setup is both very plush and firm yet not harsh. The bike never does anything funny and after the suspension was done the bike handled much better. I would use Dave J on service alone but the added bonus is that the suspension works really really well. My bike is an 07.

Thanks for the info guys. I had my 02 250F suspension done by Nor Cal with Race Tech gold valves and my 05 YZ250 done by RG3. When I got my 06 YZ450 it felt better stock than either of the aftermarket rebuilds I had done. My current 09 450 feels better than the 06 even and I'm concerned that changes will ruin the great feeling I have now. Anyone have experience with changing 09 stock KYB 's using Dave's service?. How is the cornering? small and large bump action? braking and acceleration bump action? stability?

I appreciate all the information.

On another note, I just bolted up the MRD 96db with sparky pipe and she rips through the low to mid like melted butter. Good quality product! Thanks for the information re. MRD.

Flat rate is a great thing..... When it works and something doesn't go right.... something as simple as a stuck seal adding 10 minutes to the job starts cutting into that dollar... !hr is about right on the money, sometimes everything works right and the planets align and you can bust a pair out in less than an hour, but that is few and far between...:excuseme:

The key to being a good flat rate tech is to do every job as fast as you can do it thoroughly and correctly. Doing it twice is wholly unprofitable from any vantage point.
