Gas tank latch

Hey guys- Recently, every time I took off my seat to check my airfilter, I noticed the rubber latch (at the rear of the fuel tank ) was un-hooked. I would simply re hook it and go riding. When I hooked it, it seemed tight. Today I found the dumb thing missing, Anyone else found a problem with the thing? I can't see where there is enough movement to make that thing come loose. Now I have to try and order a new one? Good luck. :)

i had the same problem. just like you i lost mine, but i have never replaced it. didn't see the need since i figured i would just loose it again. i have had no other problems related to it that i know of. i'd say just forget about.

I've lost mine too. Now I just use a large O-ring to hook under frame tab. A 50 cent fix

I haven't lost mine, YET, but it would be a real good idea to safety (lock) wire it onto the frame.

If you don't have one yet, buy yourself a lockwire pliers. From grips, throttle cable onto the carb body, spokes together, brush wire between your brake pedal and frame, etc, etc, the thing makes lockwire jobs absolutely cake. A pretty invaluable tool.

Thanks alot guys- You confirmed my own opinions. I like the .50 cent fix idea. Now to dig up an old O ring in my overflowing garage. :)

I lost mine too. Exact same thing, every time I took the seat off it was unhooked, then missing. I just bought a new one. More dollars than sense I guess. It is a $10 piece of rubber. Gotta love OEM. Next time i'll ues one of your ideas.

I lost mine too. Sounds like a common problem. I left mine off until my next ride and found it in the dirt along side the track (I guess it could have been someone elses the way these things fall off!).

Like Kevin, I safety wired it on when I re-installed it. Hasn't budged since.

After I found mine loose I crimped the bracket where the thing attaches to the frame back bone so it cannot fall off if it comes loose from the tank end.

Still got my initial issue rubber

Glad to hear I was not the only one. The crimping ought to be one of the initial mods along with airbox, throttle stop etc.

Ha, lost it on the first ride two years ago. Paid $10 for a new one and lost it on the second ride. Damned if I'll pay for another one.

Mine came loose, too. I just tightened the screw on the tank, haven't had a problem yet (it's been 1 year).

My new 426 didn't even have one.

I loathe interacting with my dealer so I blew it off.

Damn, I thought my parts-eating garage ate mine. (Similar to the sock-eating clothes dryer, only its hungry for small motorcycle parts.) So far, I haven't lost the new one, but I'm going to try Clark's idea of bending the tab in.
