07 rebuild and performance upgrades (with pics)

You got me thinking I did mine wrong so I spent a 1/2 hour serching this. I found that I was right. You need to set the cams to factory WR settings with the YZ cam installed. You have it one tooth off and what you have now is WR cam timming again. The only difference between the two cams is the YZ cam has the gear installed to the camshaft about one tooth off compared to the WR.

Todd

Yes thats right......should not be one tooth out, thats for the older wrs without an auto de comp using standard wr cams to give them yz cam lift

Actually that shot is YZ timing. Count the pins, 13. Stock WR was 14.

Wrong YZ timing with 14 links same as WR

Right timing as verified by Grayracer

On the 450's the YZ exhaust cam should be timed exactly the same as the WR cam. That is the marks on both cams should line up with the head just like in the book. Shifting it over a tooth is only needed on the 400/426 cams. I can't see the exhaust mark in the picture but it could be ok. It looks like in the pic it's not quite a TDC so it's hard to tell.

Yeah it's a little hard to tell from the photo but all marks line up. It's a little wonky looking photo as well as the motor's on a bench, so it's not square. There is also no tension on the chain. I rotated the crank several times afterward and all the marks continue to line up.

Lining up these marks put's you one link shorter between cams on the cam chain.

Can you take another picture? This time with the cam chain tight and be sure to have the timming mark on the flywheel set perfect. This will for sure tell us what you have. Like said above, rotate the crank around a few times and then line up timming mark on crank for TDC. This sure seems hard to do, but it really is not.

My Wr had 14 Pins between the marks wit hthe WR cam. WHen I put in a YZ cam It changed it to 13. This is a 05 WR450.

It's the same on the 07

I'm feeling good about the timing. Everythings back together, not that that's a biggie. My confusion only came from # of pins between the cam 12:00 marks. I am well versed at lining up the dots 9:00 12:00 12:00 3:00.

It's the angle of the motor in the pic. Look at the original WR timing, it looks off to.

That's true but the timing marks still line up with the head the same as a WR cam would.

Excellent post,......thanks for the pictures, I have +/- 4000 miles of trail riding on my '06 with an occasional HS, but I am old and slow, I check the valves every year and they havent moved, I been wondering if I should look at my piston but now I think I will wait, like I said I dont ride it hard and have only seen the rev limiter a couple times, so what do guys think? check the piston or not?

I'm looking forward to a ride report. Will you continue to use this post?

I'm sure it's pretty good. Mines been bounced off the limiter a fair bit as well as gotten really hot a fair few times.

I guess you never really know unless you look though.....

Yeah I'll keep it ongoing on here.

Hopefully Sunday.........

Well today I didn't have a whole bunch of time. I also stumped on a tool. Need a 30mm socket for pulling the clutch basket and never made it into town today to get it. So I plulled my pressure plate and clutch plates. Got my new friction plates soaking in oil and I repacked my muffler.

Hopefully I get my clutch sorted by Friday, motor in Sat, test ride Sunday :bonk:

Leave it...both my dad's and my 06 had 13K miles on them.

I sold mine and my dad rebuilt his...all it really needed was rings.

We put the stock valves and valve shims in the bike and with over 15k miles on it, it still starts first kick :bonk:

Well clutch is done. Bit of a bitch going through those hard steel rivets on the gear on the back of the basket. Went through lot's of drill bits. That's what I get for cheap drill bits :bonk:

Press in and out of the small gear went easy.

Evrythings done now. Just need to clean the frame up a bit and put the motor back in :bonk:
