IMS or Clarke Tank?

I have searched about this topic and have read very good responses about over sized tanks. I am leaning towards buying the 3.6 gallon Clarke tank over the 3.1 gallon IMS. Both are not perfect but I need better range over the stock 2 gallon tank. I have a 09 WR450 and would like to hear from those who have done this conversion with an 07 -09. What issues did you have and do you have any pics you would like to share?

I have a Clarke tank on my 08 and it's well made and fits well but your legs are spread like a cheap hooker when you ride with it.

hi, i got the IMS 3.1 gal and it fits my 98 wr 400 F fine, however after 4 months use i noticed that the natural finish turns yellowish and had developed small cracks on the right lower front side of the tank near the radiator area, the store i got it from contacted IMS and we're still awaiting a response, anyone else experience this problem? Im hoping IMS would replace it, any ideas, input would be appreciated TIA

No problems here. I have had mine for 2 years now. I prefer the lower profile look/fit/feel of the IMS but it does carry less gas than the Clarke.

Nothing against cheap hookers.....

Ever considered the Acerbis one, looks like it would be a nice solution as well. Looks like it might spread your legs as well, would be nice to get some feedback on that one..

If you realy, realy, realy want a BIG tank, there is a company in Germany that makes two versions for the WR450F : a 28 L (7.4 Gallons !) version, and a 15.5 L (4.1 Gallons).

The price is apparently in line with the fuel capacity, so expect to pay a hefty premium for added autonomy...

7.4 gallons at 45 mpg i could go 333 miles- HOT DAMN!!!!!!!!!!! change the oil every time you fill up the tank

I have the IMS tank and like it a lot, don't even notice it. Mounting was simple, except I needed to add some longer bolts and spacers from Home Depot for the bottom shroud mount (a simple fix). I have not heard much about the 3.6 gal Clarke, but if I had to do it again I'd give that a shot only because:

1. 1/2 gal more capacity

2. Cheaper to start with

3. Don't have to buy shrouds, which means you don't need new graphics.

Right there is well over a $100 difference when you factor the price of the tank and all the other things you need to do with the IMS. Still, the IMS is a quality piece.

I ended up ordering the 3.6 gallon tank from Clarke. The tank came via UPS yesterday and it fit like a glove. The install took less then an hour with "zero" modifications. I really like only having 1 petcock vs. 2 with some other manufactures (much cleaner look). I did however purchase a petcock for a 2006 WR so the fuel line is facing towards the carburetor.

How much more range do you need? Half gallon suffice? I have had great luck extending the range of a stock tank...it requires boiling water and a little bit of air can gain you up to about a half gallon and doesn't cost anything....

Becareful on the new tanks though, they have thinned the plastic down in the construction...:busted:

Not sure what you mean when you are talking about a "half gallon?" Stock is 2 gallons and the tank I just bought is 3.6 gallons. We usually put on about 100to 130 miles round trip each time I go out.

I think he is talking about heating the stock tank with hot water and then expanding it a bit with compressed air.

I'd like a little more explanation on how to accomplish this. Like how do you seal off both end of the tank? And how do you inject enough air at high pressure to expand the tank? I'd think this process could change the shape enough to throw the alignment of the shrowd bolts off as well as ruin the seal on the fuel petcock.

Many years ago the large water tower (like the size a small town would have) at the Plant that I worked at had its (overflow) vent freeze on a cold winter night, thus causing the top of heavy steel structure to cave in during water usage (probablly a couple of feet).

The company that was hired to repair it used less than 2 lbs. of air pressure to pop it out. Obviously it worked due to the volume of air used, not the amount of PSI.

Not really an "apples to apples" comparsion, however the same principles would apply.

This process is used quite a bit with new Clarke and IMS tanks (at least with KTM's & Husky's). Some riders have found that a 2.9 or 3.6 gal tank doesn't quite hold that much when new out of the box. Also this method is used to fix fitment issues when tanks are too tight on the frame.

I bought an IMS 3.1 gal tank for my 07 and it fit almost perfectly but I had to order YZ shrouds to fit it. I've had it now for almost 2 years and 3000kms and it's great. I never even noticed any difference in weight (fueled) or during riding. Of course my luck was the 3.6 gallon Clarke tank came out right after I installed it. But for the extra 1/2 gallon I just carry a couple fuel bottles in my pack.

call ims directly. they are VERY nice and really took care of me. i had a VERY old one on my bike when i got it, like at least 4 years. i developed a crack at the neck and they replaced it!!
