help!!!!!! stripped hex bolt on crankcase!!!!!!!!

i was removing all the bolts on the clutch side crankcase and got all of them off exept one. stripped it and then i tried hammering in the next size up hex bit but it wouldnt get in good enough. what should i do to get it off?? any special tool that can get stripped hex bolt off. this was a bummer. one bolt from spliting those cases darn, its always something.:busted:

i did a search and came across some one who suggested jb welding an allen head on the stripped head. do you guys think this will work sounds like the easiest fix? anyone ever done it?

You could try a T15 (or whatever size goes in with hammering) type bit, maybe it will get loose. Also prior to this try to spray some WD40 in it and hammer a little bit on the screw and on the cases. Don't crack anything with the hammer!!!

Well it depends on the situation, how damaged the internal hex of the screw is and how well the grip of the torx bit is after you hammered it in. Be aware, possibly you can only try this once! Choose the right size bit, choose one that is hard enough, not some junk chinese bit, and hammer it as far as you can!

There are several other methods, but without proper tools, it's pretty hard:

- weld something to the screw and use that with a wrench

- we have some special hexagonal tools, called "stamps", that are made out of some really hard steel and come in various sizes, also in-between-size like 5,5. You can hammer this into the inner portion of a screw because it's harden then the screw itself.

- also if the hex head is completely unusable, we drill into the screw with a smaller diameter, hammer the stamp in it, and unscrew

- try a clamp wrench (but I don't give it much chance)

- you could also try to get a grip on the outside of the screw by flattening two opposite sides, but don't recommend it, since the wall of the head is already thin

If all this fails, cut the head of the screw, split the cases and you should have in the other part of the case a portion of the screw hanging out. Now try something to unscrew using that part.

I had a similar problem, While replacing my clutch I broke one of the long bolts while taking it apart (actually two). I ordered new bolts because all of mine were very discolored... for lack of better terms (compared to the new ones) and I feel weak from age and heat. I even broke one more upon assembly, while using an inch/pound torque wrench.

The problem here is that the head of the bolt is stripped, if I read this right, not the threads. An old standard trick is to drill the head off the bolt by running a quarter inch or larger drill down on it until the head pops off. The bolt can be easily removed with pliers once the cases are opened up.

What gray said...works just about every time...Drill the head off and then when the cases are apart you can get on it with a pair of pliers (usually don't even need pliers as it is not tight and was just the head of the screw that was the problem)..

i think ill try a torx bit and then it that doesnt work jb weld and allen on it. if that doesnt work ill drill it. if i drill the head off will i still be able to get ahold of it with pliers to unscrew it?

Short, yes.

torx didnt work so i bought an extractor. really hope this works. how far should i drill down with the extractor? i heard if the extractor breaks ur screwed.

do u drill the extractor in counter clockwise?

DO NOT use the extractor. Drill the head off the bolt, like I said, take it apart, and unscrew the stub with pliers.

The bolt can be easily removed with pliers once the cases are opened up.

so i just drill the head off with a larger bit than the head of bolt and then grab the threans of the bolts with needle nose pliers and twist it out. what do you mean by the bolt can easily be removed once the cases are open? are u sayig to drill the head off and then try to split cases or just to drill off head and then twist it out with needle nose pliers?

yes on splitting the cases or yes on grabbing with pliersto unscrew it with cases together ? it seems like it would reiun the case threads if i try to split the cases with the bolt still in.

There are no threads in the case half on the side where the bolt head is. They are in the other side. Drill the head off and take it apart already.
