Autodecompressing cam for WR400?

13 posts in this topic

I searched on here and all over the web and I can't find where to get one or much info on them other than people have them. I just picked up a '99 and the whole thing with the decompression lever is frustrating. Can someone point me in the right direction? I can't afford a 450. If I could afford a 450, I'd already own a 450. I like this bike enough to offset the pain-in-the-butt factor of the kick start.

You clearly didnt search very hard

You can buy either the 03-05 WR450/YZ450 exhaust cam from any dealer. You will need to look the part number up from the Yamaha website.

Here are the instructions for installing it.

Clearly? Nothing is going clearly today. You find something going clearly, you let me know and I'll be all over it.

Thanks you very much for the info.

+1 on 450 cam swap in 400. I did it last year and it has been great.

I went with the YZ Cam. I got mine on eBay, but I haven't seem any lately.

I just tried to start mine the other day after work and it told me it didn't like me and wouldn't cooperate. I'm new at owning one of these. I had a heart-attack kick starting session with no luck and I decided the YZF cam is the way to go. :worthy::thumbsup:

I think it's starting to like me. It's started right up for me the last 2 days. :ride:

Those instructional videos on how to start the bike are great!

You are going to want a 2003 YZ450 exhaust cam. Check the Thumpertalk store for the cam. If you can't find it give them a call.

At the top of the YZ forums page there is a sticky with common threads, so, so much info in there to read and learn. The very first one is the auto decompression mod. Yes it works on the 400, I have my Wr400 converted. In my opinion it has been the best mod I have done. Follow the instructions and double check everything and you shouldn't have a problem.

At the bottom of the page are two videos from Yamaha that have already been linked above. They may help you out until you get tour cam installed.
