Skidplate foam?

After searching for awhile, I only found WC as a source for skidplate foam. Is there any other supplier? Should I just go to a fabric store or is there a special kind that should be used?

i think i have some i never put in from a wc skid plate.let me know if you want it and i will take a look.

I have a crap load of that stuff too. Let me know if you want it also.

Go to any upholstery shop and ask for a block of it, or a fabrics & craft shop, or just by a sponge.

I don't think a fabric store would have the same kind of foam. It's like a hard plastic, and it's there to take up space and stop anything like dirt or rocks entering, rather than hold water, which would add weight.

Closed cell foam. The foam we took out of my son's 250F, which we bought with a WC skidder weighed 10 pounds from the dirt that had settled in it. We threw it away and never looked back.

I just had a look at my foam, and it is holding a fair bit of dirt in it at the edges. It's been there for quite a while, so I s'pose it's to be expected after all the pressure washings and mud; I'll probably give it a clean and put it back(which is probably what we're s'posed to do!). I might even weigh the dirt to see how much is there.

Having said that, it does keep most of the dirt and definitely rocks out when you're riding/racing in mud and dirt, but should probably be cleaned regularly.

Stroker06,

Here's some more sources for the foam. Mine is GYTR foam(it came with the GYTR bash plate), it looks like the Moose foam.

Thanks for the replies, the reason I wanted the foam was to deaden the sound when bike is in neutral and clutch is out. I just installed MSR skidplate and it is really loud in neutral and also while riding.

Since I just trail ride weight is not really an issue high on my priority list, so I will check locally and if I don't find any I will get back with you all.

Thanks again, Stroker06:ride:

If the skid plate contacts the frame rails, you may, as I did, have some luck with two strips of inner tube rubber glued to the plate along the contact area. My son's was so loud it even had me worried until I took the plate off and ran it. With the strips added, it sounds much more normal.

That what I did. Except I didn't glue it to the skidplate because I really enjoy three-handed installation procedures.

No point for it...

For what? The foam, the rubber strips, or your post?

Well we are on the foam topic I'm still looking for where I can buy that thin foam that the factory guys are putting in there fenders. I have looked around my local stores and have had no luck yet..

Where abouts in their fenders? You can't cut up some of the skid plate foam to fit? Are they lining the underneath side with it?

I believe he's talking about a sort of liner for the fenders to keep mud from sticking to the underside.

Yeah, I thought that might be the case. I probably should have tried that too!

That foam just traps leaves and crap underneath the engine. I took mine out after one ride so I could clean out under the motor.

Sorry a little late getting back on this thread. They are using thin foam under the front and rear fenders but it's not smooth it has bumps in it. I got some 1/2 inch thick stuff that I might try and shave down a little and stick it in the fenders to try it. But the stuff they have is so trick looking!
