Heads up! 06(-09?) Fork Base Valve plastic cracks

4 posts in this topic

This is just a heads up about the 06(-09?) Kayaba SSS fork base valve plastic chamber. One of mine was cracked, and apparently quite a few other owners have had the same problem. MXA mag consulted Pro Circuit , and they said the simple preventative measure is to drill a small hole in it.

Here's the MXA article http://www.motocrossactionmag.com/ME2/dirmod.asp?sid=&nm=&type=news&mod=News&mid=9A02E3B96F2A415ABC72CB5F516B4C10&tier=3&nid=58ACA024A1914220BE802C43DAFDFB23

Nice reminder; this has been an issue for a few years. I believe the 08-09 already have the hole drilled? I'm sure someone else can verify. There is some good info on this issue:

Not news, but as said, good reminder.

There has been some debate over whether the the problem is truly related to hydro-locking the free piston. Dave Johnson (DaveJ) has seen a couple of pistons break in spite of the fact that they were already drilled, and I don't recall what he has discovered since then.

Regardless, The mod improves overall suspension action by increasing the air volume over the free piston, so that only the ICS spring has a significant influence on the free piston pressure, so it's a good thing to do in any case.

I obviously haven't spent enough time on the forum! I might drill a few more holes in mine.
