Do I need Piston and Rings

2 posts in this topic

I am thinking about replacing my piston and rings on my 04 yz450. Do I need to replace both or can I just replace the rings? What wears out on the piston itself?

If you are going to remove the head, cylinder etc it is advisable to replace the piston and rings at the same time.

By no means is this a written rule, you can replace only rings if the piston is in good condition and/or money is a factor.

Piston wear is generally found in the gudgeon pin bore, piston skirt and the piston ring lands. Obviously there are other possible defects that can warrant a piston replacement.

It pays to thoroughly clean and measure all aspects of your piston if you choose to reuse it.

The cylinder will require a hone pending the new rings.

See this thread in regards to cylinder honing
