Kickstart gear

I'm going to best describe this. when i was putting my bike back together i bought a brand new kick start shaft and i put it in and kicked it over and it started right up, the next day i went to kick it over the kick start got stuck down, i took it a part put it back together and the same thing happend, i must not be doing something right with the spring, could someone help me.
