8000km tear down / clean down /pimping - what ever you wanna call it!

my wr has just hit 8000km 8218km to be exact.. It gets new oil every 1000km and filter every 2000km. I dont ride hard, but i do rider everywhere.. from mud (now winter) to sand dunes in the summer. Its my dual sport bike, if i can call it that. The bike is stock -

Only mods i know of are

Throttle stock removed(from factory)

grey wire is cut

Snorkel removed

stock exhaust gutted

fuel screw turned out 2 turns.

The bike also still has the AIS. Figured removing it wont make such a difference.

Ive had the rear spokes replaced at about 6000km, when i noticed they were loose and a lack on my part to check them, meant that i couldnt tighten them as they were stuck.

Now here's the thing. I rode about 120km today and on the way home, i decided that she now needs some tlc.

Im technical minded so ill be doing everything myself.

What should I be looking at checking out other then the engine?

Frame

Suspention

Wheels

Drivetrain.

Im going to be taking it apart little by little, cleaning here and there, lubricating this and that.

They cables - clutch - Accel and hotstart are all still original - they are fine, but should i look at replacing them or just lubing them?

Would appreciate all feedback

You need to buy a manual, and do the maintenance 'by the book'. If you have been neglecting something as simple as spokes, you have a bit of work ahead of you. Don't worry, it's fun to do.

ive got the manual.. in pdf..

yeah ive been riding on road for a while and then switched to dirt... the spokes was a nice surprise.

so the manual is the best way forward?

Krannie's dead right. Read your Manual and stick to it.

Failing that, if I were you I would:

a) Pull the rear suspension apart and clean/check/grease all the bearings including the swingarm pivot.

:crazy: Do the same with the steering head.

c) Clean the forks out and replace the oil.

d) Rebuild the rear shock. (ie clean out and replace oil/nitrogen.)

e) Clean and lubricate the cables.

f) Lubricate all lever pivots. (Hand and foot, including the kickstarter).

g) Check valve clearances and adjust as necessary.

g) Change my oil and filter a lot more often!

h) Check my spokes a lot more often!

I could add to this list, but IMHO this is a bare minimum to consider/do.

(BTW I wouldn't be surprised if it needs rings too.)

I check the spokes every wash since i had them relaced.

engine oil is changed per manual - every 1000km or 600miles.

I ride recreationally so there is no need to change it every other ride.

the airfilter gets cleaned ever 3rd ride.

When I change my oil every 600miles, its still pretty clear. There are guys that change it every 1000miles?

1000kms is fine as long as your not riding hard

Im with you on the spokes, i keep my maintenance up but i never check the spokes for some reason...

im at 6500kms and ive just gone over the bike including front fork oil, valve adjustment, oil/filters, front/rear brake fluids and radiator coolant. + a full grease and clean. Next step will be to tear down the shock.

Thats what im planning. Ill be doing it myself though... It cant be that difficult?

The bike is currently just wheels frame and motor. Will be cleaning accordingly.

I would also start to transform it into more of a rally / dual purpose bike by reviewing the gearing - adding more protection and better lighting.
