Trouble finding 46t sprocket for '04 YZ 450

I have searched the TT store and several catalogs for a 46t steel sprocket for my 2004 YZ 450, to no avail. Does anyone know where I can find one? Thanks

Check with Ironman I have a 47t one on my bike they might have a 46t.

46 usually gets into the realm of either premium sprockets or special order parts, or both. That's also a fairly small size, and you'll have a lot of contact at the slider with it. Probably better to use a larger front along with a more normal sized rear.

What are you trying to accomplish?

I am trying to gear the bike taller to where 3rd gear pinned is much like 4th gear at just over mid throttle. Right now my bike is at 14/49. I had thought about trying a 14/46 combination, but since these sprocket are hard to find, I may have to go up in the front.

If I run a 15t front sprocket, will I need a new engine case saver? It is almost touching the case saver with a 14t on it.

I run 14/47 and love it you could always give it a try. I have an 04 also.

I am not for sure on exact calculations but when I went from 14/49 to 14/47 I noticed a huge difference. Better traction more use out of 1st in tight woods and I mainly ride in 2nd or 3rd on a MX track 3rd pulls forever to me in my current 14/47 configuration.

You keep referring to throttle settings as if they were RPM levels, and it's confusing things a bit.

First, if it says "14T" on your front chain guide (case saver), you can run a 15 on it. I had the same thing on my '03. You'll have to unbolt it to get the chain under it, but it will fit.

Second, as to the gearing itself:

With the stock 14/48, your calculated speed at 8000 in 4th is about 63 mph. In 3rd at 10000 RPM, it's around 65, so it sounds like you're there on an RPM basis, without doing anything.

Let's go deeper. Each tooth you drop from the rear is worth about 1.3mph. 14/49 is about 62 at 8K, 14/48 about 63.3, and 14/47 about 64.6.

Going to a 15/49 takes the calculated speed at 8K in 4th to 66.4, and in 3rd, at the original 63.3 mph, you'd be turning about 9250 RPM. Going farther, 15/48 puts 8K in 4th at nearly 68, and at 9K in 3rd, you're at your original target of 63.

You can mess with it more. The progression from one step to the next is linear. The speeds are calculated, though, and will be as much as 10 mph higher than actual speeds or more depending on the dirt surface you run on. Still useful for comparison, though.

Enter your ratios, sprockets and tire sizes in the blue shaded cells. The info currently there is for an '03-'04 YZ450 only.

For an '05, use a 2.652 Primary ratio

For an '06 and up, 2.652 Primary, and change 2nd gear to 1.533, 4th gear to 1.090, and add 5th at 0.952.

I usually try to pimp the TT store but Motostrano.com has closeouts on driven aluminum sprockets for 15 bucks. No more 46's (I got the last one) but still looks like a decent selection. Check their outlet store.

Both you and finch have recommended the 14/47 combo, so I am about to order a 47t. Thanks. If it doesn't gear it up high enough, I will eventually try a 15/48 setup (monkeyed around with Gray's chart last night).

I just noticed that your '03 is a big bore and you named her "the Beast." How fast is she? :doh:

Also, is it necessary to use new sprocket bolts when I install this new sprocket?

I have an 01 426, (pretty new at this) would it be similar to the same ratio as his 03'? When I got it the front sprocket had 11 teeth and the rear 48, (which worked great for me because I am in the woods no stop) I am also trying to get more out of each gear?
