I always use an air impact driver. Did you bend the washer flat first?

bend the washer first, then put it in first gear and use a 27mm. wrench... at least I did it today and worked perfectly...

I always just hold the rear brake when I loosen and re-tighten the nut...

If you have no impact wrench available, and the nut's being stubborn, roll the chain back over (if you've taken it off) and lay a sturdy piece of wood or a hammer handle across the swing arm to lock the wheel. Absolutely works.
