Turbo YZ

Some of you may have read my thread "turbo snowbike" in the general fourms. I started out asking about a turbo Suzki with a track kit i had seen and ended up buying a turbo to put on my yellow 06 yz450. I have been waiting to start this thread. now that im getting excited for the dunes this project is rolling right along. i know people have turboed honda 's, Suski's and YFZ's but i have been wondering if anyone has turbo'ed a YZ? Thats my big question. does anyone know? cant wait to hear this thing run! post away!

here are my most recent pics. cracked the oil pump cover when tapping into it for my oil line. once the new one is in oil lines will be complete.

i wish i knew of a dyno around my area. i live in a small town in montana. maybe i could take to to sturgis during bike week and put it on a harley dyno! does anyone know of any powersports dyno's in montana? im hoping for over 80 horse

It may be just me but it looks like you have a hole in the exhaust. Looks awesome though i'm jealous. Keep up the good work and keep us posted.:thumbsup:

yeah that looks slick although i wonder how well it will oil the turbo and i see the hole too. But definite a+ on creativity.

nice idea!

ive got some questions....

what are you gonna do for fueling?

what boost pressure?

whats the CR?

id also recommend taking your design and having it rebuilt by someone who can get you a good weld. whats on there now will only cause problems sooner than later.

otherwise, i wanna see that thing in action. but theres a LOT of work left to do.

there was a hole. its fixed now. its really hard to weld this stuff. if it breaks ill take it to a better welder. im using a aeromotive fuel regulator. im thinking 5 pounds of boost to start with. there will be no airbox. ill just run a good K&N with a pre filter

I wouldnt trust that if you plan on using it primarily in the dunes...

What is the compression ratio BTW? Did you have a custom piston made?

i have a 480 athena kit and the athena piston compression ratio is slightly less than stock. eventually i will have CP make me a 480 lowcompression piston. unless i go back to the stock bore, either way i will probably go low compression eventually

nice. straight shot into the carb.

I have heard that carbs dont react well to boost, but at 5psi that might not be a problem. any bov? lol

You will find out that you are going to need to take some steps to equalize the pressure in your float bowl with that of the intake tract between the turbo and carb. Otherwise, as soon as it goes positive, fuel will cease to flow up the needle jet, the turbo will blow fuel out through the carb vents, and the engine will basically quit running until vacuum is restored. Something like a pressure based rev limiter.

You also need to work on your welding.

i have the fuel undercontroll. like i said i have a regulator and will be T'ing and pluging all the nessisary vents on the carb. this is my 1st personal turbo build but i have helped my dad build up turbo'd and supercharged snowmobiles. i will run a BOV if i can find room for it.

PS if you had seen the width of the gaps we welded up you would see why they dont look so pretty lol

What a crazy project! I hope you continue to keep us updated.

That does look like a difficult weld. What kind of gas are you using?

From the look of the first pictures id say you have a flux problem.

Whenever I have problems with a gas regulator or run out of co2/argon and use straight argon from my aluminum welder that is what seems to happen. If you can close a gap like that you can sure enough weld.
