YZ450 leaking gas

7 posts in this topic

My Son was riding yesterday and we noticed a gas leak from the gas tank. It was leaking where the shroud bolt to the tank. Does anybody have any ideals how to go about fixing this problem? Thanks

It sounds like it is leaking at one of the metal threaded inserts. Is that right?

It sounds like the tank is cracked. If that is the case I would just bite the bullet and buy a new one.

You can try to melt the plastic back together but untimetly it will leak again.

I have found that Yamabond does well for fixing small leaks at mating surfaces. You could try pulling the insert out, and re-installing it into the tank with some Yamabond. You can buy it through the thumper store I think.

What year is it? Many may have stock tanks sitting on their shelf if they have an oversize tank. Check E-Bay.

Yes it is leaking from the insert, and it is a 2003 YZ450F and how do you pull the insert out? Thanks

Bummer dude. Once the tank is compromised like that, it will be very difficult (and unreliable to fix). I punched a hole in an old KTM tank from a zip tie of all things! I tried to fix it, but just didn't hold.

Oh well, after further inspection the the tank has a 3/4 in crack at the insert for the shrould to be mounted. Guess I have to get another tank.
