Jeff, 1/27/03, 0807, Oregon, 83 miles, loosened and retorqued to 47 before riding. No problems.

I am not sure what catagory this should go in. We need a catagory called was gonna have problems. Mine was delivered 2-5-03. It is #808. I put 100 miles on it before I checked it. The nut came off at about 25 pounds. Also a warning to any not quite proffesional mechanics like myself reading this board. I have seen some of what I am pretty sure is purposely wrong advice given on this board. I dont know if this advice was given flipantly or maliciously but was sure disappointed to see it. It had to do with the subject of getting to the nut to check the torque. Tim

REPLY TO THIS POST ONLY IF YOU HAVE NOT HAD ANY PROBLEMS WITH YOUR WOODRUFF KEY

Several members have come up with some great ideas on getting to the bottom of the Woodruff Key issue. I would like to bring all the information together for documentation purposes. The 30 day warranty period is expiring for many new owners. I would strongly recommend that you contact your dealer concerning this issue and keep a record of the date you brought this up. By bringing together specific data, we can increase our standing if we run into further problems in terms of Yamaha taking care of this problem. In addition, we might be able to find a pattern related to production date, state of sale, miles and torque.

TO MAINTAIN INTEGRITY ONLY POST THE REQUESTED INFORMAION. FIND ANOTHER POST FOR OTHER COMMENTS.

Please post the following (try to keep in order)

Name, date of purchase, serial number, state purchased (or county for outside of US), miles on bike, any torque adjustment after purchase.

AS YOU PUT MORE MILES ON YOUR BIKE, PLEASE EDIT YOUR ORIGINAL POST TO KEEP AN ACURATE TOTAL OF MILES.

62 miles. sn 0771, torgue verified by very qualified dealer Hattiesburg cycle at pick up. No problems yet. Exhaust baffle removed. I have not and will not remove intake snorkel until this issue is resolved. Removing snorkel will only make it run leaner and more likely to pop. I NEVER touch the throttle at start-up... I had a most unpleasant experience this past weekend with another bike going underwater and us being unable to restart deep in National Forest, and unable to walk it out due to flooded conditions. After riding other bikes to camp, getting 4wd, and 3 hours of trying to find a forest road back into where bike was left we were able to get it out after dark.... Thank God for GPS or my son would be without his XR200... That is precisely the situation I don't want to be in with my WR450... YAMAHA must speak and solve this design problem...

I had the dealer check when bike came in and they said everything was correct out of the box.

Bike has about 1500-2000 miles on it. Nov. 2004

Bought my WR 7/3/04, dealer did the lap/loctite/retorque BS before I picked it up...

Never broke the WR key, but an inspection in Aug. revealed the idler gear 1 had a couple broken teeth, ig 2 had broken teeth, ig2 axle boss in side cover was broken but starter still cranked with no problem...

My dealer got me the parts for his cost, $198+tax.

... YAMAHA must speak and solve this design problem...

They have. It's called the '04 parts upgrade. Unfortunately they're not going to pay for it and at this late date I doubt you can pressure them to. If you like the bike just suck it up and install the '04 parts. You'll sleep better......
