YAMAHA WR Owners I Have a Question?

Hey Guys, I have been looking at alot of forums and came across a post on one that said the WR's are dogs out of the box and are slow as hell. The person who posted this said he could not believe how Yamaha could have detuned a bike so much compared to the YZ's. My question is is this true and for you owners how do you like your WR and whats your take on the bike when stock. I just pre-order a 2003 WR450F and was wondering what you guys think about the WR's. I went with the WR because I am going to mainly be trail riding, my Brother order a 2003 Honda CRF450 and I don't want to be left in the dust.

out of the box they are definitly restricted. That is why this forum is so nice. here is a list of free mods.

air box lid off

pull baffle out

get it yz timed

cut the throtle stop to YZ size

BK MOD

and re jet to your conditions.

all of out bikes rip. We all help each other out. Unless your are like EGO and you talk to yourself to much. Another thing you can do is search the archives. Do a search on each of the things that i mentioned. you are sure to find what you are after. You wont be disappointed. As far as the 450 goes though no one has one yet so the free mods have not been found for this bike. but i am sure they will be colse to the same.

Its true the WR's are detuned and Yamah has done so to target a specific group. As lewis points out there are many free mods to make the WR sing like a bird and sting like a bee. Just call me Ali.

One thing though the WR even out of the crate is no slouch, it will hold its own and then some. The mods just give you a fire breathing Wide Ration YZ

I've done all performance mods except for YZ timing. Did Taffy's jetting.

My buddy and I can't tell the diff between my wr and his 03 CRF450(no mods), minus suspension difference.

We do MX, so I'm sure you'll be please on the trails.........

You could have ordered it from Canada. Cheaper with the exchange and very little mods to be done :)

My WR400 Rips... I take it to the MX track once in a while and it just amazes me. Of course I am faster on my buddies yz250f and my 125 but the wr400 is a blast and is no slouch! I have my airbox lid removed, throttle stop cut, exhaust baffle/spark arester removed and street leagal kit. I prefer the WR timing for trails and play riding.

I don't believe the 03's will be dogs at all, And you can't blame the bike manufactuars for the the enviormental restrictions our government puts on the internal combustion engine. I believe the WR was restricted to try and make it green sticker legal, (in anticipation of other states adopting green sticker programs) and thus compete with the XR. Honda has made BOO COO Bucks off the XR. As it turns out the WR is a much better bike than the XR, (natural progression) but Yamaha was looking to fully take over the market. The main thing that keeps the XR selling now is name recognition, after all they were good for so many years.

The difference is not really all that dramatic for trails and general off-road, especially after the free mods. I would do the airbox, throttle stop, jetting, and baffle first. Ride it awhile, then if you want, do the YZ cam timing, grey wire, and silencer. Lots of guys on this forum have kept the WR cam timing, and really like the power. Especially for tight stuff. I ride mostly desert with about 25% tight stuff, and I went with YZ timing. It just gives a little stronger hit in the middle and top end now. Either way, you won't be disappointed.

I agree, I hav a 99 wr 400 with no air box lid, cut throttle stop and no muffler baffle and it screams. I prefer the wr timing for the type of riding I do. I am sure the extra 50cc and the magic button will be SWEET :D I am sure you will enjoy the bike. After all isn't it supposed to be 80 percent rider and 20 percent bike (or something like that) If you don't take the order on your bike I' m sure you will find people on this forum who are just looking for an excuse to upgrade. ( I am just waiting to be done with this damn house remodel :) )

2 of my friends and myself bought our bikes about 4 months ago all within a few weeks of eachother. I of course got the WR and so did my buddy but his brother wanted the cr450f .. The speed diff was big at first but with the above mentioned mods it became a close match,Up untill the CRF blew a head gasket or warped the head im not sure which... Either way it was pissin coolant all over the place and i dont think he even reached 1000 miles yet! If you read the CRF forum you will see that about half a dozen other guys are having the same trouble(maybe more by now?)... Both of are WR's are runnin better than new!!

Thumpingood, from Dave's post it sounds like it was a CRF owner that was badmouthing the WR's. Everyone here seems to love the bike. You made a good choice. Enjoy it without concern, it's a great bike.

I think a big part of this has to do with the effect of the grey wire on the 250F WR model. I know my bike was a serious disappointment in the power department when I unload it from my truck the very first time. Mid range power was a joke.

I did all the free mods including YZ timing and rejetting and it is a completely different story. The biggest impact of all was cutting the grey wire. Maybe this is not as much of an issue on the 400/426. If not for the the grey wire (on US models), then I would say that the WR250F was an awesome bike out of the crate. The rest of the mods just made it better. :)

95mph STOCK thanks to a local sherrif who volunteerd to clock me... No gearing changes NO free mods allthough the dealer did the throttle stop so that helped... OHH ya and i could have had sooo many new bikes this past weekend if i woulda raced for pinkslips in the dunes... I was running a fully aired up knobbie and climbing oldsmobile hill in glamis and beating tricked honda 400ex's 300ex's warriors blasters one banshee a cr250 and a cr 125... now if i woulda let some air outta the tires i woulda been even better... hehehe...I ride alot of Dunes and Alot of Hardpack so i got the best of both worlds...

I have an XR250 and a 400, but am also wondering about getting a WR450. The reason that I like the XRs is that they are comfortable, reliable and fun. I am concerned that a WR might be a bit too full-on for the general looning about that I do. What do you reckon?

I have heard many reports of people buying WRs and thinking that they were getting better XR400s and then being greatly dissapointed. The WR is stiff, mean and agressive and loves to be ridden agressively. In that respect the wr does not make a better woods bike! To sit on the seat of the WR for 20min or so will explain what I mean. My best advice is to test ride one first.

The XR line is bullet proof and it turns out the the WR line is very close to (if not just) the same. XRs will continue to sell because they are great off road bikes the attitude of the WR and XR are not the same, so you must decide which will make you happy. good luck
