drz400sm gearing???

Recommended Posts

I have a 05 sm and now I'm running 16-41 gearing but when I go on the hiway too much rpm for me. I would like to us a 38 or 36 rear sprocket, has any one used them? whats better for 65 to 75 rpm? and where can I get one? thanks Gene

15-41 is the sm stock gearing.

16-41 or 15-39 is a good highway gearing. Those combination is a good compromise for street & highway use.

Anything lower will make your low end torque suffer.:busted:

I have a stock DRZ sm with nothing more than than a Ti muffler sys and the JD carb kit.

Right now I'm running 16-38. Best setup I've had so far. I've always been a tall gear man, so it's perfect for me. It's not like me criticize other riders, but for those who complain about a tall rear sprocket(36-38) they need to get in the habit of using 1st, 2nd and 3rd a little more. With the old stock SM gearing, first and second was something I used from a dead stop and nothing else. With my gearing, I use everything including 1st for a 30-35mph corner.

Yeah, with a 38 in the back, you can't cruise at 50-55 in 5th anymore. But, what's wrong with using 4th? For those complaining about around town riding, what's wrong with using 1st or second. I can wind second to 55 mph.

3rd gear will wind to 75mph, 4th to over 85, and believe it or not I can cruise all day long on a level road at 90 mph in 5th.

What more do you need to know?

The bike doesn't seem to struggle at all as long as I'm in the right gear. But, you do have to be in the right gear. Previously, I had thought about a 440 kit and a carb and when my extended warranty runs out, I probably will do those things. But, it won't be because I feel the current configuration is underpowered.

once you put on a fcr and a 440 kit you'll realize how much your bike is underpowered with that gearing and a basically stock motor

I've run 41t rear and 16t front for 18 months, mainly on the freeway, in conjunction with 3x3, Dynajet and straight thru system......

I found it great, but, having watched this forum I see that some guys are running 38 or 39 rear with the 16 front.....so I grabbed a 39t from Talon here in England and stuck that on.......wow...even better now !

No loss of accelleration, but you feel like you get another gear at the top end....and calmer freeway rpms....(still wheelies dandy tho)

My son has the same bike, and was running 16 front and 41 rear....we had a tear-up and were neck and neck until I stuck it in my new 5th gear...then it was ta-ta slow boy...he's changing to 39 too now

Take note though, we're both about 12 stone (168lbs) in our gear....heavier riders may not get the same result

Sounds like you're just gonna' have to try if for yourself and see if it does it for you.

My opinion is that stock, the bike really needs a 6th gear unless you never cruise faster than 65mph.

Sure, the bike will go faster than that, but to me, doing it for miles on end makes me realize that the overall ratio is a bit too low.

On the other hand, I see no point in gearing it so tall that you're basically hoping to have the bike idling down the freeway at 75mph and having big gaps from gear to gear.

When you're sport riding, that can be annoying, too.

What I have used is a stock 15-tooth up front and 38-tooth and a 39-tooth rear sprockets.

The rear sprockets came from Sprocket Specialists.

I'm currently using the 39-tooth rear, and for me, this is the best compromise.

I feel that there is no ideal solution because the bike isn't a 6-speed and it's only a 400 (which is considered a pretty small-displacing street bike these days).

Yeah, but you still have to get moving. Heck, I thought it was a bit annoying taking off from a redlight with 16-41... I can't imagine how much more it would suck with 16-38... you must be dang near required to slip the clutch when taking off.

not at all regalman

PS Talon do both 39 and 16 here in England, I'm sure they'll ship to the States if needed

Good thought about the Talons. I've been to the Talon site a number but have been unable to find anything on the site about ordering anything. They carry sprockets for my GasGas enduro and would love to get a few of them.

The only place I found so far was R&T Trials and they carried the trials sprockets only.
