How do I tell if my YZ426 is an 00, 01 or 02 model?

14 posts in this topic

I bought a bike from an old mate of mine who said my YZ426 was an 02' model. I downloaded the manual and the clutch looked very different to what I have, and then found out it had a YZ400 back wheel on it. All things say it has an 2000 model 426 clutch and carby so to me that must mean it is a 2000 model? How else can I tell does anyone have any tips?

Look at the serial number on the frame behind the front numberplate & count 8 numbers back..that will show you the year model. Also, I remember my 02 426 was the first year to have the newer style front hub, fatter than the 01 & older years.

10 characters. The TENTH character of the VIN code is the year model, not the eighth. A "Y" is the year 2000, '01 and '02 are the characters 1 and 2, respectively.

The 4th through eighth characters are vehicle info (model, equipment)

Ok thanks for your help, here's a challenge, it has a blue painted subframe, 2000 model clutch with the frame number: JYACH01C8WA005556 and is in Australia.

So WA00 is the 8th from the back and 10th from the front, does this say 2000 model?

You have a 1998 YZ400. The W was the 1998 year character.

Also explains .. "found out it had a YZ400 back wheel on it".....yz400 rear wheels are not interchangeable :busted:

Ok that means I got ripped by a friend who said it was an 02' YZ426 :-(

I have investigated a bit though and definitely measured a 426 piston, it has a 426 carby as well! Does that mean someone modified converted a YZ400 if that is possible? Is there any other explanation to this? Thanks for all your help

If it does have stock graf and they are in reasonable shape it will say titainium 5 valve on the bottom of the side pannels if the bike is an 01 or 02 426

Top valve cover should read 5 valve, the 400s were only 4v I have a 2000 with an almost identical vin WA00 mine is a 2000. Easiest way tot tell differance between the 3 years was 00 had a blue steel sub frame 01 had a blue aluminum and 02 had a raw finished aluminum.

Not true. All YZF's except the '10+ YZ450F are 5 valve engines.

This is also a 3 year old thread.
