Mix & match 426eng/250 frame, can it be done?

2 posts in this topic

Any techs out there know if it's possible to put a 426 eng. in a yzf 250 frame. If so, what's it take and is there any significant wieght reduction?

There is almost no difference in the 250F frame with regard to weight. There is a difference in the '03 (YZ450) and later vs. the '02 and earlier (YZ426) frames of almost 7 pounds, however. The biggest hang up is usually the fit of the rear of the engine into the swing arm pivot. Switching out the steel sleeves in the crankcase for other models, or fabbing a pair for the purpose, will generally deal with that.

For the most part, these kinds of swaps may be interesting, but they end up costing more than simply going and buying a later bike.
