Best Tire to Buy???

Hey all, I haven't posted anything since last riding season (CA), but it's good to be back and have access to TT's vast knowledge. Anyways, I need a new rear tire for my YZ450F, and I've narrowed it down to 3:

1. Maxxis Maxx Cross Soft/Intermediate

2. Michelin M-12

3. Dunlop D756

I'd like a tire for muddy and or sandy conditions, with some hard, dry rides in between the rain. Out of these 3 tires, which one wears the best, and has the best mud handling? I'm currently running the D756 and I loved it, but it wore out way too quickly. Any info is greatly appreciated.

I prefer the 756s front and rear. Either that, or I will even mix match brands and use a Pirelli front (used to be the Mt44, cant remember what it iscalled now)

Out of the three you have listed i would go for the M-12. Although the S-12 is a very nice tire.

Are you talking about the scorpion pro?Definetely a good tire. Real close pattern to the Michelin S-12.

My buddies like their M-12's, they say they wont go back to the 756's.

I have the Starcross and I love them.

Of the 3 you listed I would get the M-12's

Just looked it up, it is the Pirelli Scorpion XC MS Front.

I absolutely LOVED that front tire for many years. I am just getting back into Haresrambles after about 7 years off (was road racing)

The tire sut flat WORKS in all terrain IMO, which is important around GA for me. Over a lap of a harescramble you run across rocky trails, slick red clay, loam, sticky mud, sand, rooted trails and anything else you can think of.

The Maxxis is too heavy, the 756 wears too fast, and neither works as well as the M-12. But you might consider the D952. Great wear, good price, & better in both sand and mud than a 756.

^Him being in the same state as you, and with his knowledge of the thumpers, his advice means more than mine

In OUR mud (east coast) I didnt like the 952. Wear on teh 756 is an issue, but it just works so well in all the terrains we hit over here

I bought an MH3 Michelin. Wears like iron, good in the medium to hard, but not so great in the mud.

Check out the Bridgestone 404 and 403 combo, Thats what i'm running on my 426 and am lovin it. That combo worked great out at Glen hellen.

The m12 is the best wearing tire Ive had. the 756s and 745s are great performing tires, If all you ride is pure dirt you really cant go wrong with either.Great tires. However, if you mix in some pavement and or gravel roads they are toast quick 3-4 rides and they show tremendous wear. I like the M12s in the softer/loose/ to intermedieat dirt, but on pure hard pack they are scrary. Pavement feels alot like ridding on gravel with the m12. They last really well. Ive heard that the s12 rear lasts even longer but probley even more slippery on the hard stuff. Its a pretty tough choice when buying longer lasting tires they do last longer but there are some compromises usually, like weight and traction on hard pack. The m12s are a pretty good compromise the 952s are decent as well but I think the m12s do last a bit longer. Ive read the m12 front and s12 rear is a good way to go but have not had the chance to try it yet.

The versatility of the 952 is one of its better qualities, along with the wear (and the price I get them for). Where I ride in SoCal, we have everything but loam. It goes from silt to sand to hard pack to rocks. Sorry, no intermediate.

Choosing tires is an exercise in compromise.

I would go with the Maxxis Desert IT..love that tire for the rear. Don't even think about getting it for the front...it will wash out like crazy.

I cant wear out my rear starcross and it's only a 100 90 19 (big mistake on a 450)

Like gray said, the 952 is a great all around tire for the rear. I like to run the 756RR on the front.

Whoa, glad I just read this post, since my wheel's at the shop now for a new tire. I just told them to slap on a D952, cheers!

A desert IT in the rear and a d756 on the front is a tough combo to beat for So Cal terrain. You didn't mention what part of CA you are from, but if you are riding the desert down here I would give the Maxxis desert IT a look.

Been there. Not as good as a D755 front/D952 Rear, IMO.

Hmmm. Might have to give this combo a try next time around. You're the second person I have seen recommend it.

I agree with tdamore, Run the Maxxis on the back and the Dunlop on the front. The combo works great on most terrain. I ride everything from Hard Rocky terrain to single track through the woods.
