Why do clutches have thin and thick plates?

My clutch pack uses 3 thick and 3 thin plates. Could I use 4 thick and 2 thin to change the clutch feel? :lol:

Start by counting again. The parts book shows 4 of one, and 3 of the other, with 8 friction plates (so there couldn't be 6). I'll guess that the 3 are the thin ones, since they are the same as the '07 YZ450, which are thinner than the earlier YZ plates. I don't recognize the PN on the other 4 (1TA).

This is probably done to adjust the stack height, for reasons known to Yamaha engineers. How much it would alter the feel to change one or two plates would depend on how different the thickness is. Remember that changing the height of the stack will also change the amount of spring pressure applied to the plates to hold under a load.
