Street gearing on drz400

I have a drz400s, with 15/47 gearing on it. It came with 3x3 mod, jetting, and aftermarket pipes and a yosh muffler (which is really loud). Going down the road at an indicated 57mph (So realistically more like 52mph) is pretty much the top of the comfort zone. (rpm wise- as far as I can tell)

My question is-Are other bikes equally uncomfortable at this speed, or is it just the exhaust? First gear is really low on the bike(I can idle off from a standstill on level ground, and plunk along at 5mph), so I don't think I would miss the lower gearing in the dirt except in extremely technical stuff. I could also get an exhaust insert to lesson the vibrations, which is something I should probably do anyway. Opinions?

the stock gearing is :

400 E 14/47

400 S 15/44

400 Sm 15/41

Looks like they put an E sized sprocket on the rear, bet it wheelies for fun :lol: An SM would cruise at 60 mph all day long and only your empty tank and numb ass would stop you, I have a Yoshimura RS2 on the bike, on the gas its as loud as you like, but once cruising its acceptable, the S model has a 44 sprocket as stock and the SM has 41, ive ridden my SM on gravel trails and that gearing seemed fine to me, depends what sort of off roading you wanna do, as to a 44 rear sprocket or a more street orientated 41 :excuseme:

I like 14/44 with my street set up. Its good for me to about indicated 63-65mph. Generally I run around 55 or so. I use another bike if I need to do a lot of hwy travel.

14/44 gearing is essentially exactly the same as 15/47. One down on the front is equal to adding between two and three on the rear.

I initially wen from 15/44 gearing to 15/47(for a week or two), then finally to 14/47(E moel stock gearing) on my '07 S.

I like 15/41 for the street. The chain will need shortened to fit right but I can drop down to a 13/41 combo if I want serious off-roading and the chain still fits. 13/41 is pretty much the same as 14/44 or 15/47. So by changing to 41 in the rear, keeping the 15 up front, you drop quite a few rpms on the highway but you can quickly change the front sprocket over to something more suited for the dirt. 14/41 is like the S stock gearing 15/44. HTH

Like others have said, someone lowered the gearing a bit, probably for better off road manners. Drop the rear to a 44 (stock) or even 41 if you want to cruise at 70 mph. No matter which you go to, that Yosh pipe will still sing a bit a speed.

Maybe a stupid question :lol: but if stock gearing on a sm is 15/41 does the rim size make any difference compared to a stock s (15/44)? :excuseme:

Yep. The smaller wheel effectively lowers the gearing.

So would you think the theres a difference between the two.....or stock sm gearing is equal to stock S gearing?

How long should it take to change the front sproket? Pretty handy with tools, just never done it.

Final drive ratios are roughly the same.

I'm happy with 16/44, can get across most intersections before shifting. CVK40 helps this a bit, a jetted BSR36 with 3x3 will pull this too.

15/41 to me is the best gearing for street. Thats why the sm uses it, and that is why I put that on my S when serving street duty. 14/44 is what i use at the kart track, but it revs out pretty early for street use. anything taller than 15/41 (16/41, 15/38-9, etc...) is a waste of the little power you got and you will be using ALOT of clutch to get rolling. IMHO putting the 16 countershaft sprocket is wierd, but people do what they do. Like I said, 15/41 is the best compromise and works out to cruise somewhat comfortably at about 75 on the freeway. I could see putting the 16 countershaft on if you have the strongest motor Eddie ever built and you only weigh 125 lbs. But remember,this thinking is based on an offroad bike that had a 14 tooth countershaft sprocket until the s and sm models came out with the 15. 16 is just putting a square peg in a round hole to me. I mean, can you still wheelie it with the 16? This is what I found after two and a half years of fooling around with gearing. If someone really wants the 16, I guess that is a personal preference.

why dont you just use a 15/41 and that way you dont have to carve up your swingarm gaurd and you can use the factory length chain. the 15/41 is identical to a C hair on the final drive ratio.

I'm running 15/45 on my S with 18"/21" tires for street use and really like it. Cruising at 65 is no problem and acceleration remains spirited for in-town fun. Off road I'm sure its too high, though.

the change in gearing outweighs the difference in wheel sizes. The circumference difference between the 18 and 17 inch rim is only about 3 and a half inches per revolution, while the gearing lowers your revolutions per minute a few hundred at a time. if you get both sets of wheels and play with the gearing, you will find what works.

thanks for all the responses, think I'll put on 15/44 and see what it's like. I still want decent dirt manners so I doubt I'll go any higher than that though.

15/44 actually works pretty ok in the dirt, I even have climbed some steep hills with that. If its super technical, you may get a tired clutch hand, but really 15/44 works well in alot of situations.
