Opinions ...Which yamaha model to look for?

I am a Honda XR650L guy so I know nothing about Yamaha models.

My son is looking to buy a used Yamaha ... we want to find The XR equal

since Honda XR 400 did not come street legal IIRC.

We would like to stay in years 2000- 2006

Electric start a must

signals and headlight .. must be street legal

I prefer air cooled cause I'm a XR guy but water is OK.

80% of our riding will be trails and 2)% highway to get there.

( we live near the mountains)

The 400-450 cc is the range we want for his size.

What would you go with?

Yamaha doesn't make what you want, unless you buy a WR 450 and convert it for street use

KTM is where you want to go for a serious dirt bike with a tag off the showroom

Not entirely true. A number of WR450's are platable, especially outside California, although none came road ready with blinkers, etc., and it is true that none were actually built as street legal bikes.

And those KTM's are about $8000.

450 is the bike you want , 2003 or newer . and yes you need to put on blinkers proper brake light and head light . to get it plated . i think you could get drz suzuki's that were ready to go .

but a wr ripps it up .

there all water cooled , and fairly bullet proof , just keep it clean change the oil often and check valves .
